Imagination is a more valuable asset than experience. People who lack experience are free to imagine what is possible without the constraints of established habits and attitudes.

提纲:
Thesis: experience 不一定会产生 constraints of established habits and attitudes 的imagination.没有experience的imagination常常是invaluable. Imagination 和 experience 同样重要。
1. TS: Experience does not necessarily lead to the constraints of established habits and attitudes. (James Maxwell)
2. TS: the imagination without enough experience is usually invaluable. (in architecture field )
3. TS: imagination and experience are equally important and play different roles in solving problems and contributing to the human progress. (in engineering field, James Watt)
----------------------------
The speaker claims that imagination is a more valuable asset than experience and the reason is that People who lack experience are free to imagine what is possible without the constraints of established habits and attitudes. I agree with the claim and reason partly. Experience does not necessarily lead to constraints and the imagination without enough experience is usually invaluable. On balance, however, imagination and experience is of equal importance in human progress.
----------------------------
First of all, experience doesn't necessarily lead to constraints of established habits and attitudes. Experience itself just provides some information about former things for us and doesn't set any constraint. If we do the things according to the experience completely, then we are limited by the experience. However, if we do not, we may find some amazing things. A good example is James Maxwell. After Faraday proposed some new ideas about electromagnet phenomenon, Maxwell consulted many former papers, studied the whole electromagnet phenomenon systematically and conducted a lot of relevant experiments. Finally, by means of his profound understanding of this phenomenon and rich imagination, he successfully describe it in clear mathematical expressions, and then published three far-reaching papers, including the famous Maxwell's equations. From this example, we can find that the experience of former physicists and himself didn't lead to constraints but foundation of his imagination.
----------------------------
Secondly, imagination without enough experience is like a tree without roots and thus is useless fantasies. For instance, in architecture field, the design of a building needs imagination as well as consideration about practicability. You can imagine a very beautiful skyscraper in your mind and paint it on paper, but without the scrutiny of its structural reliability, it will never become into real architecture, because the most essential use of it is to live in instead to appreciate its external appearance. In short, useful imagination must be based on some essential experience.
----------------------------
Thirdly, on balance, imagination and experience are equal important and play different roles in human progress. In most situations, the two would act together. Without imagination, everyone will do things according to the former experience, so no innovation will exist, whereas everyone will create many impractical things without experience. The combination of the two could contribute to progress. For example, James Watt found some flaws of the Newcomen steam machine during working on it. Then he imagined to add three new parts to it and finally invented a new steam machine, converting it from a prime mover of marginal efficiency into the mechanical workhorse of the Industrial Revolution.
----------------------------
In sum, a proper combination of imagination and experience is indispensible to success. We should use the information provided by experience to create new things by imagination.
