8.14 Issue93Unfortunately, in contemporary society, creating anappealing image has become more important than the reality or truth behind thatimage.Write a response in which you discuss the extent to whichyou agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for theposition you take. In developing and supporting your position, you shouldconsider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explainhow these considerations shape your position.
Has creating anappealing image become more important than the reality or truth behind thatimage? The speaker claims so, and I concede that we can opportunely take anappealing image into consideration. Otherwise, in my view undue emphasis onattractive appearance can inevitably bring about our improper judgment andevaluation.
Admittedly, undermany circumstances plain or ragged appearance will be counterproductive tocontradiction in our hustle and bustle society. The ever-accelerated updatingof science and technology make us confront with numerous messages; therefore,we have no time and energy to scrutinize the reality or truth behind the image. As people say “Initial impressions are critical”, the pretty image can make thebasis of our further contact and realizing. From the burgeoning development ofsocial websites such as Facebook, we can learn that we need an increasinglyexternal means to expand our social scope. And at the same time, we pay moreattention to the first impression or apparent behavior by which we make our judgmentabout the person.
Hideous orordinary appearance can also inhibit people’s chase of beauty that is from ourinstinct. We humane already had the aesthetic need which can rich our spiritsand emotions. There is no denying that the fashion shows in Paris or London areso popular and they are considered as the mainstream in our current culture. Itdefinitely means that we think the appealing image of clothe are more importantthan the real utility in our life, as the garment fashion emphasizes the externalcharm.
Aside from theforegoing two provisos, however, I fundamentally disagree with the speaker’sclaim. The reality and truth behind that image should be paid more attention inthe society that we pursue the efficiency and utility. As the proverb says “Youcould never judge a book by its cover”, we shouldn’t realize people or buycommodities by their appealing images. The reality that is covered by theappearance is the actual thing we attain eventually. When we choose a partneras our lifelong mate, we really maintain that our common interests and valuesare more important than your partner’s beauty. It is common that overridingattention on image will make us neglect the reality and always make thingsworse. Arnold Schwarzenegger, praised as Arnold Strong, was elected as thegovernor of California in 2003. His renown is from the excellent performance inmany act movies, rather than his political principles and effective work. Theproblems in California’s policy and economy tell us his are not good atpolitical work and the citizens made a wrong choice mostly by the appealingimage.
In sum, we shouldpay more attention to the reality or the truth behind the image, but theattractive appearance is increasingly important in the hustle and bustlesociety.
