41 The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
I disagree with the speaker’s statement that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries. The contemporaries can benefit from the great people when we are living in the field of politics and economics, although the greatness of individuals usually are recognized by after coming guys in the field of art, and time give the coming guys more possibility to make reasonable commendation in most of field.
First of all, the contemporaries benefit most from the great individuals, especially in the area of economic and politics, so they can identify the guy as great or not. For instance, the President Franklin Roosevelt led the American government carried out the New Deal after the Second World War, promising the security and help for those in need, and American citizens benefit a lot from it, turned from poor and disappointed to rich and hopeful at that period of time, so they characterized Franklin Roosevelt as a great president. Even now, when we retrospect into that period of time, we still think President Franklin Roosevelt is wisdom and powerful man. In short, the contemporaries can decide the greatness of individuals, especially in the field of economic and politics.
Secondly, in the field of art, most of great artists were not unknown until long after their death. For example, the greatest painter Van Gogh who is mastery of painting, and most of his works are characterized by blooming sunflower and old men with compassion and understanding, was accepted by the people one hundred years later after his death, because of his invention in painting and even fine work. While hundreds years ago, in his period of time, people refused his art work, because it betrayed the common idea in the society and different skill in painting. In short, in the field of art, the greatness of individuals is usually decided by those who live after them.
Finally, time lets people think more about the individuals in the history, then the commendation for history individuals from later guys is more reasonable than old guys. The biology scientists applied transgenic skill on the plant, and then gave birth to transgenic plant, such as heterozygote rice, which can produce three times more rice than the original stain, and it means they can feed more people on our planet. That’s great! However, the transgenic plants also made other problems, such as the gene safety discussion among human. Some scientists think the out-come in gene would make some change in rice, and then cause alternation in human body, although we can recognize it now, it will accumulate with time, and we will find it out in the future, so we need time the decide if the scientists’ transgenic rice investment is advantageous or disadvantageous.
In summary, not only the guys who live after, but also the contemporaries, can decide the greatness of individuals, while time lets the new coming guys make more reasonable decision. 请大家帮我改改吧:)
