9月21 G argument

9月21就要考了,之前一直自己写了改,不知道具体还有哪些问题,希望大家可以给个评估,有没有什么不足和建议和短期内可以提高的建议!!太感谢了!!!!

TOPIC: ARGUMENT77 - The following recommendation appeared in a memo from the mayor of the town of Hopewell.
"Two years ago, the nearby town of Ocean View  built a new municipal golf course and resort hotel. During the past two years, tourism in Ocean View has increased, new businesses have opened there, and Ocean View's tax revenues have risen by 30 percent.  Therefore, the best way  to improve Hopewell's economy-and generate additional tax revenues-is to build a golf course and resort hotel similar to those in Ocean View."

As is described in the argument , the author proposes that the best way to improve Hopewell's economy and generate additional tax revenues  is to build a gold course and resort hotel similar to those in Ocean View, which is bolstered by the  increased tourism and newly-opened business and risen tax revenues after the Ocean View built a new municipal golf course and resort hotel. However, careful scrutiny of the evidence and logic reveals that the argument is constituted with holes and assumptions , and thus , not strong enough to stand.

The threshold problem of the argument is the author conducts false analogy between Ocean View and Hopewell , which no evidence is provided to substantiated . The different geographical landscapes and locations may influence the prosperity of tourism , different market circumstances may make the constitution of the companies easier in one place than others, the different economic bases and different standards for tax may account for different tax-revenues. Without more information provided to prove the similarity of the two cities , the analogy is unwarranted.

The second fallacy ,which undermines the logic of the argument , is the hastily drawn assumption that the increased tourism ,newly-open business, risen tax -revenues is due to the newly- built golf course and resort hotel. Other factors which can contribute to this result may be masked ,such as there were other newly-built recreational facilities or the attractive propagandas that had drawn more tourists. More business and tax revenues may due to the encouraging and appealing policy of the government which attracted the investors . More details should be provided what other factors have contributed to the prosperity  of the Ocean View.

Finally , even if all the fallacies being rectified ,all the assumptions being verified , the author 's proposal is still not cogent . Firstly ,the additional tax revenues cannot be assured, since the tax revenues of last year is not known , perhaps last year the city  went through great prosperity, while the prosperity may not last, even if by imitating the Ocean View, the extra tax-revenue can be obtained , however, the overall increase is not warranted .Secondly , it is not necessarily the best way to reach the result ,since no other proposals and their potential effects are listed and compared, the author cannot convince me that building a  gold resort hotel similar to those in Ocean View is the best one.

To conclude ,the argument is not persuasive as it stands for leaving out key issues and conducting false analogy. More information is needed to substantiate the author's proposal.
