50 insomnia~flower
An ancient, traditional remedy for insomnia—the scent of lavender flowers—has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored electronically. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. At the beginning of the second week, the volunteers discontinued their sleeping medication. During that week, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. Therefore, the study proves that lavender cures insomnia within a short period of time.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

Loosely speaking, as it is mentioned in ancient, it may be warranted to some extent that the scent of lavender flowers do have an effect in curing insomnia. However, strictly speaking, the study cited in the argument does not lend credible warranty to support the conclusion. Of course, more alternative explanations may warrant that the cure is not work.

Citing the study that only 30 volunteers in figuring the effect of the aroma of lavender to sleep problems, we cannot predict that whether they cover all the kinds of insomnia and strongly prove that it is effective to each one. Moreover, to evaluate the research more accurate, it do need to set another group people with such problems and do not provide such scent. In this way can we compare the difference between two groups to discover whether the flowers’ smell worked or not. In addition, we should separate them in random to get reliable statistic and phenomenon.

Without giving the way monitored electronically, it is not substantiated to say that the sleeping quality of volunteers ameliorates. As we all know, when people know something would happen, they may think about it unconscious so they may probably just act less tired after psychology functioned. As a result, a comparing group should be constructed and volunteers in each group do not know whether they are given the scent or not. To avoid of drawing a conclusion too hastily, each detailed difference in volunteer in the three week should be recognized and recorded such as the heat rate, blood pressure, breathe situation and so on.

Beyond that, I would like to talk about the last but most important point in this argument. Even if we admit that the sleep was getting better after the experiment, how can we totally attribute the change to the smell of the flower? Let rule out many other factors that would lead to the same consequence. First, the arguer says they used sleeping medicine during the first week so does it count on that and the performance is slowly presented in the next two weeks even it is discontinued. Secondly, when they are told to attend in a research, they may suspend their work or something they involved. However, these things are just the ones which made them fell stressful and tired so they arouse a problem of sleep. While quitting such problems, the appearance of insomnia just disappeared.

In a nutshell, the study is not statistically reliable to some extent as so may mistakes found in above. What should the researchers do is to set a compare group and researching for more strong evidence to justify the use of lavender to sleep troubles.
