Meanwhile, the Buzzoff Pest Control Company, which we have used for many years, continued to service our warehouse in Wintervale, and last month only $10,000 worth of the food stored there had been destroyed by pest damage. In this memo, the author suggests the food distribution company to choose Buzzoff Pest Control Company for all the pest control services for saving money. To bolster his opinion, the author provides the evidences that the loss of food stored in P city serviced by F Company is much more than that of W city serviced by B Company. The reasoning of this argument seems plausible, but lacks need more specific evidence to support it.
Giving the contrast of the loss money in two cities respectively, the arguer represents the service provided by B is better than that by F Company. However, the mere numbers of loss money are not able to show the exact extent of the loss of the food. It can’t, furthermore, presents the capacity of preserving food of each company. For example, the amount of food stored in P city could be much large than that of W city, and it means the proportion of destroyed food serviced by F Company is much less even though the total money of loss is larger. So if the author wants to strengthen his argument, he should provide more explicit evidence about that.
In addition, it is dubious to evaluate the two companies by only one month data. As we know, food storage is influenced by the environment and climate, there is a great probability that the number of pests last month in certain city is extremely high, which means that last month is an exceptional month. The author neglects the period pattern of preservation and the fluctuation of the pest activity. But we need, in fact, more long observation about the food storage to evaluation the real effect of each company.
Finally, granted that the problems I referred above are solved, there is no evident about the situations in which the food was stored, so we can’t tell if the service of the company mainly influence the loss of food. In other words, maybe the storing condition for the fast food in P city is very bad. The climate in P city is hot and damp, which accelerates the damage of the food. Therefore, the F Company may have a better service, but the result of preserving food become worse due to the bad climate. If we choose B Company to handle the food service, it may lead to more loss. The author gives, however, no evidence about the circumstance of the storing in respective city, so we cannot reasonably evaluate the services of these two companies and the author’s reasoning is weaken.
This argument lacks solid and explicit evidences to support the view and provides a persuasive reasoning for reading to agree the suggestion that choose B Company.
