正文:

Should university require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study? The speaker contends so. Though I agree that such practice can be beneficial in some aspects, the speaker clearly overlooks several drawbacks of this practice. In fact, a mandatory requirement of course selection is clearly against the very aim of higher education, and the choice of courses should always be left to students.

The merits of learning a variety of courses outside one’s field of study is beyond a simple summation of knowledge, for it not only broadens a student’s vision but also creates more opportunities for his career. On the one hand, for instance, while such courses as literature and art provide insights into human nature, other courses including math and science enhances one’s logical thinking. Thereby taking both kinds of courses may effectively facilitate the all-round development of students. On the other hand, there is an increasing demand for inter-disciplinary talents in our society. Careers associated with finance and banking often requires skills in applied math, and many occupations in engineering also necessitates the proficiency in operating computer. Even in scientific research, we can discover that the merging of two seemingly irrelevant disciplines, such as bioinformatics and quantum economics, is getting increasingly popular. Hence, taking a variety of courses outside one’s field of study can help a student pursue a better career.

Nevertheless, it would be inappropriate to require every student to spend time learning courses outside their field of study. First and foremost, students’ time and energy is often too limited to pursue additional courses. This is especially the case when it comes to the fields of science and engineering where students are usually overburdened with homework and tasks within their own field. Therefore, such mandatory policy will undoubtedly place greater burdens on them. Consequently, they may have to spend more time coping with their homework assignments and less time participating in sports and social activities, which may detriment both their physical and mental health.

Besides, our society requires professionals as well as generalists. It should not be ignored that some students show great talent specializing in certain fields, and the best way to help them is to let them follow their own interests, otherwise their attention may be dissipated and their talents might be wasted. Such rationale also applies to graduate students whose chief responsibility is to delve into a narrow field of study rather than dabbling a variety of courses. This is not suggesting that being versatile is harmful. But if a scientist (or a scientist-to-be) does not focus his attention on his research, it is unlikely for him to make any substantive progress or accomplishment in his own field, irrespective of how he sophisticated he is in other fields of study.

Finally, we must always bear in mind that the ultimate aim of higher education is to enable students to think and act on their own. Students are entitled with the freedom to choose any course they would like to take, and universities should respect their choices. After all, it is them who have the best understanding of themselves.

In fact, a mandatory requirement of course selection is clearly against the very aim of higher education, and the choice of courses should always be left to students.

Careers associated with finance and banking often requires skills in applied math, and many occupations in engineering also necessitates the proficiency in operating computer.

Besides, our society requires professionals as well as generalists.professional是形容词,应该用professionalism.

Students are entitled with the freedom to choose...entitle是被授权的意思,用在freedom上可能不如have the right.

这篇貌似没有明确提到 be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
