The parents may not be an expert on these aspects. Even if the student's parents are experts in these subjects, they may not have so much time to teach them. Second, the school education also play a important role in transmitting democratic values, creating equality of popularity, and preparing new generation of citizens to function in society. In addition, the school education also contribute to supply student with "life skills" for their future job, such as oral and written communication skills, how to deal with interpersonal relationship, analytical and critical thinking.
However, certain aspects of personal enrichment, especially spiritually and religion, should be left to parents and communities to provide; after all, by advocating teachings of any particular religion, public educators undermine our basic freedom of religion. Some controversial issues, such as abortion, and capital punishment should not be talked in schools by professional educators. Parents and communities also play important and critical role in student's growth.
Parents are the first and best educators for their children's growth. Experts indicate that 0 to 3 years, when children spend almost all time with their parents, are the most and decisive phase during the children's growth. Consequently, the role played by parents should not be ignored. It is with parents that children first say ABC, learn to express their own opinions, observe the world nearby and establish their values. Younger children like to mimic to their parents' behaviors, such as expression, gesture, polite manner and so on. Parents are the model of their children. Based on these reasons, the functions of parents cannot be replaced.
Communities are also critical factors for the development and success of children. The communities can inoculate children with value system which our nation and society shared: honesty, fairness, self-discipline, fidelity to task, friends, and family, personal responsibility, live of country, belief in the principles of liberty, equality, and the freedom to practice one's faith. Some people may argue that these values can be taught by profession educators. Even if the education may teach them these values, these are just in theory or word. Communities provide an environment to practice it. It is easier said than done. The children will realize how important the collaboration when they participate a series of community activities, especially group work; they will also learn tolerance when they meet people who have different viewpoints when they talk about some issues.
In conclusion, parents, communities, and professional educators play their own roles in training children to be well-rounded people. None of them can be replaced by the others.
