Issue 78,学校和文化冲突的,马上要考了心里没底,大家帮看看吧!
Issue 78: Schools should be required to teach the essential interconnectedness of all human beings and thus help eliminating wars, cultural clashes, and other form of conflict. In such an era of globalization and ever growing cultural conflicts, there is no escaping that schools have the responsibility to help eliminating cultural clashes and other forms of conflict. Which is the best way to attain that? Some would say that we should teach the essential interconnectedness of all human beings. While I agree that teaching the common nature of human beings help students better understand cultures, I believe that to teach the students differences of cultures and help them shape a tolerant attitude towards culture diversity is more important and more effective.
History tells us one thing: most conflicts arise from intolerance of culture differences. One case in point is the famous eight times of crusades. It was ignited generally by religion fanaticism. The Christians, who believe that Christian is the only right religion, and Christian should rule the whole world, regarded others who have different religion as heretics. The war that last for hundreds of years lead to great lose and fissure between the two worlds: Europe and Asia, Christian and Islam. What’s more, even today, there is still great gap and misunderstanding, even hatred, between Moslem and western countries. We have to admit that, culture differences cannot be eliminated, what we can do is to admit the existence of different cultures and form a positive attitude toward the differences. Genghis Khan, “The emperor of all emperors, once ruled two thirds of the known world of his period, and conquered people of all religions, have a tolerant attitude towards culture difference. He has never persecuted people on religious grounds. This proved to be good military strategy, in fact, one of his most trusted generals, Jebe, was once a young opposing solider who attacked Genghis Khan in a battle. We can learn from Genghis Khan his tolerant attitude; we cannot eliminate differences in culture, but by admitting it and attempts to live with it, we can achieve harmony.
Since most conflicts arise from intolerance, schools should not hesitate to teach students the differences in culture. Students are young people who are not deeply affected by whatever hatred and indelible bias about other culture. Schools, especially those who have students from different culture, should help students know more about other cultures besides students’ own. The most important of all is to instill the students the value that no culture is inferior or superior to one another, any culture, no matter how absurd it may seems to be, does have its own merits and deserve equal rights as any other culture to survive and thrive. Therefore, when the students grow up, their minds will not be obsessed with intolerance and bias, and they will treat people of a different culture friendly. Youth is the tomorrow of our earth, if they can be friendlier than their fathers does, we can expert a brighter future.
However, teaching the essential interconnectedness is also important, for it is the basis of understanding cultural differences. Knowing about the common humanity and things we all share helps students to understand other culture better. Although different cultures may seem very different superficially, there are indeed things in common such as underlying intentions and other common humanity. Students may find that different culture incomprehensible and hard to accept at the first glance, however, if they see from the humanity perspective, they will find it easier to understand and tolerate respect other cultures.
In conclusion, it is high time that schools begin to teach students about different cultures and make their own a tolerant, friendly attitude towards other cultures. In order to eliminate culture conflicts, we cannot expect to eliminate culture diversity, but to admit it, on the basis of a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all human beings.
