issue34 "Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines—that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences—colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work-oriented society."

论点:反对
理由:
不同学科对于学生的全面发展有用
交叉学科的出现需要不同学科的知识
社会对通才的需求也要求学生有多学科的知识背景

Some people hold that it is not necessary for the students to take a variety of disciplines and only the courses in their chosen fields are beneficial to them. This is a superficial assessment in that it overlooks the function of different disciplines and the relationship among them. As far as I am concerned, students should be required to enroll in various courses in different disciplines.

First of all, courses in arts and humanities, science and history all contribute to well rounded development of the students. Firstly, courses in arts and humanities help to make a noble and elegant person. Courses in arts edify the students' temperament, making one a pleasant person to work with while courses in humanity evoke deeper understanding of oneself and the potentialities hidden behind him/her. Secondly, the study of science contributes to the development of the capacity for reasoning and logical thinking. Although each scientific theory is based on a series of facts and certain assumptions, a scientific theory cannot be established directly by them. The conclusion of the facts and the theoretical deduction of the assumptions are indispensable. Both the process of conclusion and deduction require the aptness in logical thinking. When students are learning science, they are actually undertaking training for their logical thinking abilities. Thirdly, the learning of history makes a person wise. Our judgement for what will happen and what will not happen largely bases on what has happened and what has not happened. Many lessons can be drawn from the past and that is why history is often compared to mirror in Chinese culture. In a sense, a variety of courses in different disciplines benefit the students greatly.

Secondly, the development of cross disciplines calls for the graduates from colleges and universities with at least the knowledge of at least two disciplines. The field of bio-pharmacy requires the knowledge of not only bio-technique but also medicine and pharmacy. The research in aeronautics needs the knowledge of mechanics and human biology. Recently, the study of quantum computer has drawn wide attention. This field calls for the knowledge of both computer science and quantum mechanics. All the above exemplify the statement that these cross disciplines require multi-disciplinary knowledge.

Besides, the urgent needs for generalists in our society require the students to have multi-disciplinary background. As we see, with the development of human society, new branches keep arising and consequently specialists of a particular field does not know much about the related fields, which inhabit the further development of the this field. Generalists, on the other hand, serve to fill these gaps. Without the knowledge of several related fields, it is impossible for anyone to become a generalist.

In conclusion, colleges and universities should endeavor to clarify the misunderstanding that knowledge of fields other than the students' chosen fields is useless. They should require each student to take a variety of courses in different disciplines.

First of all, courses in arts and humanities, science and history all contribute to well rounded development of the students. Firstly, courses in arts and humanities help to make a noble and elegant person.(没必然因果,改用形容词形式) Courses in arts edify the students' temperament, making one a pleasant person to work with while courses in humanity evoke deeper understanding of oneself and the potentialities hidden behind him/her. Secondly(?怎么这里就用这个了,also), the study of science contributes to the development of the capacity for reasoning and logical thinking. Although each scientific theory is based on a series of facts and certain assumptions, a scientific theory cannot be established directly by them. The conclusion of the facts and the theoretical deduction of the assumptions are indispensable. Both the process of conclusion and deduction require the aptness in logical thinking.(好混乱啊,一会科学,一会逻辑) When students are learning science, they are actually undertaking training for their logical thinking abilities. Thirdly(改), the learning of history makes a person wise. Our judgement for what will happen and what will not happen largely bases on what has happened and what has not happened. Many lessons can be drawn from the past and that is why history is often compared to mirror in Chinese culture(无论哪里history都是mirror,没必要强调in China). In a sense, a variety of courses in different disciplines benefit the students greatly.
