ISSUE36
题目:The greatness to individuals can be decided only by those who lived after them, not by their contemporaries.
The author asserts that the descendants, instead of the contemporaries, are accommodable to determine the greatness to the ancestors. Some critics of this idea argue that we can almost freely assess the present leaders because we are democratic country. However, as for me, I will contend that the author’s assertion is true merely in some cases. If we scrutinize such fields as the natural science research, business or economics, and the arts and literature, no doubt it becomes clear that which one, the contemporaries or the descendants, is really qualified to decide the greatness to individuals generally relies on the specific areas.
To begin with, as for natural science research, the contribution to individuals depends predominately on time which might be several months, years, and even longer. What is the reason? The first one is that to ascertain a new theory, the first and indispensable step to determine the achievements to the scientists, is a quite complex process that generally consists of ensuring presumptions and reasoning that the scientists made before, and repeating those enormous data based on a motley collection of complicated experiments. Second, owning to the limitation of current scientific technology it is impossible for the contemporaries to make a quick decision on a new theory and therefore to individuals. John Nash, for example, an outstanding mathematician within the world, almost in his sixties won the Nobel Prize in 1994 not only because it takes many years for people to completely comprehend his abstruse theory within the realm of mathematics, but also because taking into account or putting into practice such a theory certainly need a longer time.
Sometimes, in the second place, undeniably, the greatness can be decided immediately. Take the field of business as an example. As we all know, both Clinton and Greenspan are always honored for outstanding talents in the economic field throughout the world. The former, President Clinton successfully impelled a surge in economic efficiency of the United States during his period. The latter, similarly, Greenspan who is the oldest chairman of the United States Federal Reserve Board in history, made varieties of endeavors such as keeping inflation low the extent to which can maximize sustainable economic growth and thus stabilizing the market of United States. In general, no matter what they had done, the effect-whether positive or negative-on the economic growth was invariably conspicuous and immediate; in other words, being their contemporaries can readily and promptly distinguish their successes from some unexpected failures.
Finally, with regard to the area of the arts and literature, the conditions become more complex, adducing two of the most typical situations as follows. First of all, some authors who always describe the brisk and blithe themes about the current society are undoubtedly welcomed by both the contemporaries and the descendants in that these writings invariably encourage people to feel the charm of our lives. In addition, a cynical writer usually criticizes the contemporaries, which makes the public uneasy or even aversive. As a result, the contemporaries are primarily reluctant to offer them an objective and impartial assessment. Nevertheless, these writings might prove beneficial to the next generation and the descendants therefore will give a novel but different evaluation.
In conclusion, due to analyses and reasons mentioned above, I hope it has been shown that who can determine the greatness to individuals is a controversial topic at least within such fields as the science, economics, and the arts. Consequently, the author is extremely arbitrary.

To begin with, as for natural science research, the contribution to individuals depends predominately on time 没看明白~~ which might be several months, years, and even longer. What is the reason? The first one is that to ascertain a new theory, the first and indispensable step to determine the achievements to the scientists这里有个小问题,好象第一段也出现过,就是determine的使用,当表示一种相当于decisive determination的时候直接用determine to什么,一般我们表示目的的话应该说the first and indispensible step for scientists to determine the achievement 这样和后面也比较连贯, is a quite complex process that generally consists of ensuring presumptions and reasoning that the scientists made before, and repeating those enormous data based on a motley collection of complicated experiments. Second, owning to the limitation of current scientific technology it is impossible for the contemporaries to make a quick decision on a new theory and therefore to individuals.

Finally, with regard regardingto the area of the arts and literature, the conditions become more complex, adducing two of the most typical situations as follows.

In conclusion, due to analyses and reasons mentioned above, I hope it has been shown that who can determine the greatness to individuals is a controversial topic at least within such fields as the science, economics, and the arts. Consequently, the author is extremely arbitrary.
