GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP IN PLANT SCIENCE IN FORAGE SYSTEMS AND MANAGEMENT

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Two M.S. Graduate Research Assistantships is anticipated to be available Fall
semester of 2015 in the area of forage and grasslands with an emphasis on forage management.
The successful candidates will conduct research on management of grasses and legumes, stockpiling cool
and warm-season grasses, soil quality, growth rate and accumulation of forages, and forage nutritive value.
The selected candidates will be responsible to conduct field research in Crossville and Spring Hill, TN
(housing may be available in these locations when needed) and lab analyses in Knoxville, TN. The selected
candidates must also be willing to present his/her research findings at meetings of various professional
societies and at field days.
EFFECTIVE DATE: Screening of applicants will begin April 12, 2015 and continue until filled.
Stipend, Qualifications & Applying: This GRA will provide a monthly stipend for 24 months, with both in
and out-of-state tuition costs waived. A student health insurance plan is included. Continuity of funding is
subject to satisfactory academic and research performance and compliance with established Standards of
Conduct. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of undergraduate GPA and coursework, GRE scores, letters
of recommendation, a resume, and a letter of intent. Admission both to the University of Tennessee
graduate school and the Plant Sciences graduate program is required. Other requirements for admission to
the University of Tennessee graduate school may be obtained at (http://admissions.utk.edu/graduate/).
Environment: The Plant Sciences Department is located on the Agricultural Campus of UT close to the
main campus. The department is housed in both the Plant Biotechnology Building and Ellington Plant
Sciences. Research facilities will be located in the Ellington Plant Sciences Building and at the University
of Tennessee Research and Education Centers, which are well equipped for crop production evaluations,
along with supporting greenhouse and field facilities. Knoxville, a city of 180,000, is the economic and
cultural center of eastern Tennessee. It is consistently ranked as one of the ten most livable cities in the
nation and lies just 40 miles west of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are many
opportunities for outdoor activities, like hiking, camping, canoeing, and fishing.
