195 "The goal of politics should not be the pursuit of an ideal, but rather the search for common ground and reasonable consensus."

These days, there's violent controversy over the subject of idealism and realism in political field. Some maintain that the ultimate goal of political is to pursuit an ideal status, while others argue that it's more important to seek common ground and reasonable consensus. As far as I am concerned, both idealism, which means to achieve an eventual ideal status, and realism which means search for public consensus, of politics are important, and I believe the latter should to some extent take precedence over the former.

To begin with, the ultimate goals for the pursuit of an ideal in human society, which involves attaining the eventual liberty, equality and the search for happiness, should be upheld to direct the social development. Such idealism is like the beacon, which point out the direction and orientation of our further progress: it offers us the brilliant picture of man's future--an advanced, peaceful and lovely world, which we all dream of; it provides us tremendous confidences and enthusiasm to work together, think together and fight together for such common goals. For example, without Martin Luther King's great idealism and onerous conflict, the American black perhaps would still have to sit at the back on the bus; without Mohandas Gandhi’s great political idealism to achieve social and political independence, India might still be one colony of Great Britain. Idealism gives us hope and energy to advance toward our ultimate goals. Without such ultimate idealism, human being would be somewhat less energetic and enthusiastic to struggle together to achieve the perfect status of our society.

However, taken it too far away, overemphasizing the focus of political idealism would to large extent bring about undesirable results to the sound and stable development of society. Consider the case of the failure of the Utopian Owen. He believed the status of a perfect world where there were no wars and fights, every one was born equal, and no information need to be hided. Owen once tried to establish such an ideal society, however he failed to take into account of certain practical conditions and existing difficulties during its construction. As a result, his plan did not obtain the general support and finally faced up with his predetermined failure. Absolute idealism without the solid basis of realism, which involved common ground and reasonable consensus, would only confront its destiny of failure.

In order to guarantee the effectiveness and efficiency of policies and measures, political leaders would have to prove the public their practical goals and thus obtain considerable common ground. Moreover, when they face up with confrontations during the procedure of achieving the final goals, they should make certain conformation and compromise to attain public consensus. In some sense, while those policies and measures are like the rudder of a ship, the tremendous support of the great public are like the powerful engine. Only when they earned large-scale national or even international acknowledgement, can the politicians fulfill their ideas. Chairman Deng, for instance, rather than sticking to the idealism of communism, enacted the marvelous and far-reaching policies of "one country, two systems", which earned not only national support but also international acknowledgement. Such a policy, which to some extent was the result of compromise, eliminated the opposite differences between capitalism and socialism, and led to the unite of Hongkong to its motherland, China. In this sense, those great politicians should vary their ideals in accordance with the practical situations to achieve common ground and consensus.

To conclude, while we lay our attention on search for common ground and reasonable consensus to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of policies and measures, we should also ware the importance of political idealism. When the common ground and consensus guarantee us the stable and efficient social development at present, the pursuit of an ideal promises us a splendid picture of the world in the future.
