Pink bat
In baseball, pink bats are limited-supply baseball bats manufactured by Louisville Slugger for use by select Major League Baseball players on Mother's Day, first introduced in 2006 in association with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. Each year on Mother's Day, Major League Baseball authorizes the use of the specially dyed bats — temporarily suspending the regulation that restricts players to using black, brown, red, or white bats — as part of a weeklong program to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization.
In addition to wielding the unique Sluggers, players and field-staff wore pink wristbands and pink ribbons, while bases and homeplates were tagged with the breast cancer awareness logo, and line-ups were written on pink card. All of the specially-produced memorabilia was later autographed and auctioned off on MLB.com to benefit Komen for the Cure. In its debut season, "Major League Baseball and its fans collectively raised $350,000" through the program.

Harry Wright

Chicago Cubs
My Giant!」

It seems like a Mets fan with a strange sense of humor or history has helped the hard hit investors who collectively lost billions in Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme.
In an auction of Madoff and his wife's personal assets, Madoff's blue satin New York Mets baseball jacket with his surname stitched on the back was valued at only $720 but sold for $14,500.
Overall, the day's take was twice as much as New York auctioneers had hoped for.
(Knuckleball) The Aerodynamics of the Knuckleball
Knuckleball
First, we need to understand that a knuckleball is different than a "standard" curve ball. The knuckleball is the most difficult pitch to master. The knuckleball is thrown with no spin and at a slower speed. The ball appears to "dance" in the air as it leaves the pitcher's hand and on the way to the batter.
The ball moves through the air in an unpredictable fashion. At first, some people thought the "dance" was caused by passing breezes. However, the most likely reason for the "dance" is a very slow spin. Researchers have learned that a slight change in the orientation (position) of the ball with respect to the air flow results in dramatic changes in the forces acting on the ball. Not only does the magnitude (strength) of the force change, but the direction also changes. This is why the ball seems to dance.
How the forces change magnitude and the direction of the baseball is not known. However, one theory is that the stitches in the ball play an important part. The stitches most likely cause turbulence on and around the surface of the ball. The flow separation is reduced. As the ball slowly rotates it may change to laminar (smooth) flow, which is more separated. This altering state of flow from laminar to turbulent (and separated to attached) could cause the forces on the ball to fluctuate (change) thereby causing the ball to "dance".
It is important to note that even if the pitcher throws the ball without any spin, the flow changes created by the stitch pattern of the ball will cause the ball to spin.
Spitball and Vaseline Ball
The knuckleball is very difficult for a pitcher to learn, much less control. An easier and more effective way is to use a lubricant such as saliva (spit) or vaseline. This causes the ball to slide through the pitcher's fingers and thus have little spin. Therefore, the ball moves like a knuckleball, but at the speeds of a fastball. This makes a spitball next to impossible to hit. That is why they are illegal in professional baseball.
Other dirty tricks used by pitchers include scuffing (scratching) the surface and/or polishing the surface. Just as a rough surface promotes turbulent and, therefore, attached flow, a polished surface will maintain laminar and separated flow. By roughening one side and polishing another, the effects of various pitches will be exaggerated (made greater), helping to confuse the batter. A pitcher, then is not just a ball player, but an amateur aerodynamicist as well.

O, Death
O, Death
Won't you spare me over til another year
Well what is this that I can't see
With ice cold hands takin' hold of me
Well I am death, none can excel
I'll open the door to heaven or hell
Whoa, death someone would pray
Could you wait to call me another day
The children prayed, the preacher preached
Time and mercy is out of your reach
I'll fix your feet til you cant walk
I'll lock your jaw til you cant talk
I'll close your eyes so you can't see
This very air, come and go with me
I'm death I come to take the soul
Leave the body and leave it cold
To draw up the flesh off of the frame
Dirt and worm both have a claim
O, Death
O, Death
Won't you spare me over til another year
My mother came to my bed
Placed a cold towel upon my head
My head is warm my feet are cold
Death is a-movin upon my soul
Oh, death how you're treatin' me
You've close my eyes so I can't see
Well you're hurtin' my body
You make me cold
You run my life right outta my soul
Oh death please consider my age
Please don't take me at this stage
My wealth is all at your command
If you will move your icy hand
Oh the young, the rich or poor
Hunger like me you know
No wealth, no ruin, no silver no gold
Nothing satisfies me but your soul
O, death
O, death

Chicago's Baseball (BP Crosstown) Cup Runneth Over
04.28.2010
First Toyota, now BP. Call me a purist, but I'm getting tired of these advertisers honing in on our baseball territory.
Earlier this week, it was announced that the annual Cubs-White Sox Crosstown Series will now be known as the BP Crosstown Cup. The Cup will be awarded each year to the winner of the six-game series between the two clubs, and in case of a 3-3 tie, the Cup goes to the winner of the sixth game.
Like Chicago baseball fans needed a Cup to intensify this rivalry.
Will the addition of a tangible trophy make fans more excited to watch this series? Probably not, seeing it's already the hottest ticket--and one of the most expensive regular season tickets--in town for both teams and their fans each season. The games are usually sellouts, leaving desperate fans to turn to their friendly neighborhood scalper. Fans are always wiling to pay a bloated fare to ride the crazy train and get in on the revelry. After all, you can't put a price on trash-talking the other team's fans in person, especially if you share the same zip code.
Even the players and coaches have a history of helping to heat up the rivalry. Who can forget the 2006 collision at the plate which ended in Cubs catcher Michael Barrett punching A.J. Pierzynski in the jaw? If you forgot, here's a fabulous photo galleryrecalling the moment.
Pierzynski was one of two White Sox players present at Monday's announcement. While watching clips from the press conference, I couldn't help but wonder if the players and coaches were pretending to put on a nice act (and pretending to actually care about the Crosstown Cup) for the sake of their new sponsor. Especially the always-outspoken White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen, who isn't shy about expressing his feelings towards Wrigley Field every year (perhaps he was rolling his eyes underneath his sunglasses):
"But one thing about Wrigley Field, I puke every time I go there," he was quoted in the Chicago Tribune as saying before last year's series with the Cubs.
No wonder BP wanted in on the action.
I hate the fact that America's Favorite Pastime is becoming increasingly covered in advertisements. But I understand the way business works, and in this economy, who would say no to a sponsorship? I just wish that the official bragging rights of this local baseball competition went to a local company rather than to British Petroleum (BP will be the presenting sponsor of the Crosstown Cup through 2012).
While the new BP Crosstown Cup didn't make an appearance at the press conference, fans won't have to wait too much longer for it. The series kicks off at Wrigley Field from June 11-13 and concludes on the South Side at U.S. Cellular Field from June 25-27. The all-time record between the two Chicago clubs tips in the White Sox favor, 37-35. The Sox won the 2009 Crosstown Classic 4-2.
