TOPIC: ARGUMENT179 - The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.
"It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious-an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction."
The president of the Cedar Corporation asserted that it is unwise to rehire Good-Taste Company for the following reasons:its prices are increasing in recent years;complaints of several employees about Good-Taste.Further,the author suggests that they should hire Discount instead which provide various and delicious fish and poultry dishes at a low price.
First,the fact that Good-Taste is the second most expensive caterer in the city may not indicate the price of dishes are actually very expensive.Perhaps there are only four or five caterer serving in the city and thus the price may be accepted by many citizens.And it's possible that the average prices of the third or fourth expensive carterer are close to that of Good-Taste while the first expensive company has extremely high price.Further,the president didn't compare the inceasing price of Good-Taste to those of other companies.As a result,it's entirely possibile that all cafeteria companies have increased their prices due to the increasing price of most foodstuff.
Second,we can hardly conclude the dislike of employees to Good-Taste on the limited complaints of employees.The three complaints of last month are too weak to demontrate the bad situation.Moreover,the complaints that described as"they find the experience 'unbearable'" can be related to temporary bad waiter servises rather than the bad taste.
Third,Discount can not saticified employees who seldom eat fish or poultry.Common sense tell me that there are many people who would not like to eat fishes.And the varied menu of fish and poultry indicate the relatively few menu of other food.
Finally,the fact that the president evaluate the taste of Discount by his own experience are too weak to reflect the overall evaluation of his employees.We know that manu of president has a big distinction to manu of ordinary employees.As a result ,the casual taste of food from cafeteria may bring freshness to the presidents.
In conclusion ,the suggestion by the president is prematue.To better support the suggestion,the author should provide more direct information that can adequately demonstrate the high price of Good-Taste;the complaints to Good-Taste are representitive and related to its bad taste;Discount can actually satisfied the majority of employees and the taste of the president himself is representative to employees.
