ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives." The assertion that only when the study of history relevant to our daily lives can it be valuable is superficial due to the misunderstanding of the value of the history. The study in history is not only valuable when it can influent our lives directly, relevant to our daily lives, but also meaningful when it can change our way of lives indirectly in some other extent. For example, in the area of science and technology, we can find out the development of technology in one period from its historical relic. In China, Terra Cotta Warriors were found in the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, many of whose color were still not faded after thousands of years. Some swords unearthed from ancient tombs, hundreds years old, were not got rusty. We should never underestimate the study of history in technique area, scientists now can learn much from past. The study of culture and literacy in history is also meaningful. From the study of culture, we begin to know the characters of one group of people, their habits and the factors that had effects on their ways of lives. The influent of literacy is obviously in any period any countries. Chinese students learn to read and recite poems in Tang dynasty when they are in primary schools. Novels of Victor Hugo are still read by many people and have influence on them. The power of culture and literacy can not be ignored, and that is also the value of history. The study of history also has value on politicians. Leaders of any country of the world need to know the history of past; not only for the purpose of being learned, but also avoiding the mistakes made by the past leader or the kings of ancient kingdoms. Politicians will learn from the history about the subtle relationship between leader and public, and how to comfort the masses. For example, Mao Zedong, as the first chairman of People’s Republic of China, always read history books and award of the conflicts between different stratums in China; he seized the opportunity and led the army to success. As the Chinese old saying goes: You may trim your appeal if you take brass as a mirror; you will understand the gains and losses if you take people as a mirror; you may know rise and fall if you take history as a mirror. Only when we realize the cause of the rise and fall in history, can we avoid the same mistake happens again. The value of history is not how it related to our daily life but how it can indicate the future.
