In the reading passage, the author argues that offering employees an option of 4-day a week with lower salary could benefit the economic environment and save the company a lot of money. In the listening passage, however, the speaker says that this option would be more costly and harm the company and employee in the long run.

First, the lecture says that offering employee this option would force the company to spend more money to provide training and medical care. Although the money paid for working hours is the same, the company would suffer a lot in the medical care and training for the mere reason that there are more people in the same company than before.

Moreover, more employees mean more work places and more computers for a single company, which is also a disadvantage of offering employee the option. Furthermore, those companies may not hire more employees for there are less working hours. In fact, the company may want some of the employees to work overtime to compensate for the less working hours. Even worse, their expectations for the employee may increase in that they need the employee to finish the 5 days' job in 4 days' time, which is contrary to the statement in the reading passage that it may make employees work more efficiently and effectively.

Finally, contrary to the statement in the reading passage that this option would increase the job opportunities, it may indeed decrease jobs. Because of the less working hours during a week, employees may lose to chance to advance their ability and lose the opportunities to be promoted. They may even lose their jobs due to a lack of proper practice of their jobs.

To sum up, the 4-days option would be harmful for the company as the employees themselves in that it may cost more money, eclipse the ardor of the employee and decrease the job opportunities in that area.
