I agree with the statement that children should be encouraged to finish their works with independence. Parents can not or not be able to do everything for their children since the future belongs to the next generation, not to the elder.
Admittedly, some helps from parents may be efficient in the childhood. No doubt, new-born babies have no understanding about this complex world. It is their parents that leave them a strong influence about the complicated world. For instance, my parents taught me recognize the character, recite the classics of the culture lecture, and most importantly, distinguish the mortal and evil. However, parents should not pay much more attention on children for somewhat the children can easily be spoiled and this may lead he/she in trouble when he/she lives alone.
First, parents deal with more difficulties the children facing for the children rather than let them be. This may result in that children can not learn to be mature or grown up. If a boy/girl do not work the problem out on his/her own hands, the same question may trouble he/she a second time, eventually a third time or fourth time. Here I remember I broke my unique pen at thirteen, which was a award for the first prize in the competition. And I treasure it like a gem. The broke made me dispute like falling in a deep. Overwhelmed by the pain, I turned to my father, expecting he could fix it. In fact, my dad rejected to me and told me that your treasure only to be reborn in your way. Later days, altogether with my dad, I read as much as dozens books, done experiment and consulted the professors so I fixed my award. From that on, I could not only fix a pen but learned a truth of life as well. The truth is only through completing a task individually that can be thought as knowing it.
These are my reasons why I agree with the independence more.
The reading material mainly tell us that the benefits of group. But in the listening, the professor is not approval of them. First, the reading said that wider range of knowledge and skills while the professor thought that individual can contribute more because of the efficiency. Usually, a group takes advice and works as whole, which may waste lots of time. But individually, a person can move more quickly.
Second, the professor mentioned that some suggestion may be missing as the adviser is not so influence.
Third, in the professor's perspective, a person work individually are ,in some extend, highly creative since he or she could not be disturbed or influenced by others, which is not available in a group.
Last but not the least, if a group failed the project, who would be blamed to? The leader? No, according to the professor the guys who should to be blamed to be are the all members.
I agree with the statement that the main duty of a professor is to educate than to research. Professors are mostly the elite of a society and are who can deeply have a nation influenced. So, the duty of professors definitely determines a country powerful or not.
First of all, when a professor is doing his or her research, what about his or her students? Who does tell them the theories of truth? And who can instruct them? No one else can, because the professor is indeed the expert in his or her own field. He or she knows the secrets or theories and only he or she can explain why and how the theories been formed. Professor Gao, my teacher of quantum mechanics for instance, was teaching me and my classmates until he received a military project plan. Thus, His teaching schedule had been broken up. He had to quit educating us because of the project. Later, he asked his RA to substitute for teaching. Obviously, we can't catch his RA's ideas and in the final exam, sixty percent of my classmates failed.
Secondly, the outcome from a research may not have any value in practice now but may have in future. Then, here comes the trouble, why do the professors do the research that values nothing in our times rather than cultivate the youngsters who will develop and turn it into practice in future. In an economist's sight, education is more profitable under such circumstance. Meanwhile the path of the research may be filled with obstacles and even could not work out just with today's knowledge. Einstein, for example, paid his totally attention to Grand Unified Theories in his last years. We know the most intelligent person failed and no one succeed till now. If he spent these years in training students, it is possible that the students can help him solve the problem.
Here are why I am approval of education is more beneficial than research.
