Could anyone please provide some insight on Duke AM Econ?
How would it compare to Oxford Mphil in Econ in terms of academic placement? (Ox beats Duke in terms of placement in the industry for sure)

Judging from the Ads I got..I feel that there're too many people applying for finance...is econ that undervalued or due to other reasons.....

have not checked yet, but reckon it should cost much more than Oxford...
Oxford has many scholarship opportunities and the tuition is not expensive

Duke is better in finance than in econ I think.

And probably because there are many Chinese students in the MA program...

Duke Econ下学期开始一学期学费1w8，再加上每年2000的保险。。。暑期8000一个小学期，一个半月。。。不算便宜，如果资金不是很充足的筒子请思量。。。

I applied just before Jan 20th and there are some limited scholarships available.
But overall, the tuition fee in oxford is less expensive than the average..

Ox and Cam are kind of beyond the so-called main stream nowadays. It seems that many of their most famous stars are not in their best age.

Of course, the frontier of economics research changes all the time. May be after several years, oxbridge will come back to the frontier again. However, currently, I do not think they are better than the top univ in US or schools like LSE in terms of the reputation of economic research.

Besides, the macro in Ox is not strong. If you really like macro, you should think it twice.

Thanks! Did you study in Oxbridge before?
Professors in UK schools mainly focus on teaching while those in the US do research quite extensively due to different university systems.
I'm interested in financial economics and economic development and judging from oxford's placement, quite a few go straight to world bank or IMF for development research.
BTW, how would you evaluate Duke AM Econ and Oxford MPhil Econ?
I choose the latter because of its higher selectivity.
A little insider insight would be much appreciated!

Well, I did not study in Ox. I do some economics so I somehow knows what the top univ are doing. So I am sorry that as an outsider, I may not be able to provide with some much valuable information.

But, to me, Ox dominates Duke, if you want to find a job in the industry instead of the academia. Reasons are simple. It has brand name, great alumni. Also, it is a 2-year program allowing more time for prep. Ox is not that far from London, it is also a positive factor.

Another thing to mention, I think both Duke and Ox are good enough for phd prep. The thing is, according to the past record, it is not that hard (relatively) to go from ox mphil to dphil. So if you are risk-averse, Ox may be a better choice. Whether you can find a decent academic job after the dphil is another issue though...
