这句话的第一句就是搞不懂。这个Davis到底站在哪边的？这句话的文章意义求解！！

appear to这边理解又出现偏差。不解。整句 what in contrast to the colonies是一个意群，davis一个意群。appear to 和to be perculiarly souhern 的意思和语法始终搞不懂。这逻辑上是什么关系啊！？

(what in contrast to the Puritan colonies主语) (谓语动词appears) to (宾语Davis) (修饰成分to be peculiarly Southern)

Contrast to the perception of Puritan colonies, for Davis, it's more peculiarly Southern.

擦！不好意思。我看着看着又看明白了。。这边最靠近appear 的 to 其实并不是真正的prep ，而是 to David 的意思。。，这里to David 是哥插入语。。。。无奈了。不给暗示啊！！
