这是一个长句，其中有些 bullshit 可以不去理会，只看主干即可。
Though the recent ...  will not foment outright protests... surely such discord will only serve to further _____  a people long since wary of foreign influence
这里注意关键词 Though 是转折让步，说明后半句的意思要与上半句的 will not ... 意义相反，再注意 discord 和 wary，我们可以知道后半句的意思差不多应该是：因为 wary 外国势力的干涉，这个discord 只会更加带来反抗（或之类的），这五个词里面只有 gall 和 rankle 与本意思相关

gall （取第二个意思）
vt.  transitive verb
1
:  to fret and wear away by friction :  chafe <the loose saddle galled the horse's back> <the galling of a metal bearing>
2
:  irritate, vex <sarcasm galls her>

rankle vt.

transitive verb
:  to cause irritation or bitterness in ...

example:

讚同Max~
我用的排除法（因為有些不確定rankle的意思，前兩天才背的啊T-T）。“though...not foment outright protests”，明顯是引起反抗的意思。
disabuse糾正顯然不靠譜；demean和debase都有貶低的意思，也完全不符合。。。
簡而言之，這是easy模式吧？
