The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.
'A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin.'

In this article, the author contends that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin based on the fact that most of the volunteers took part in a study campaigned by Luxess company reported that their faces were experience a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. However, this argument is merely based on unconvincing evidence and suffering form several logic fallacies.
The main problem with this argument is that the author's conclusion is only based on a vague study reported by this company. In this study, much detail information is failed to give. How many volunteers participated in such study? And amount to which number can be called as "most volunteers"? Also what kind of people has taken part in? The author misses provide us such key statistics which can make a difference to the results. If they were a group of young children who still regenerate the skin due to their own growing, the improvement result cannot attribute to the effect of the new Luxess face cream. Furthermore, we have no idea about the previous condition of the face of this group of people. Therefore, even if concede the Luxess has effect, we can only conclude that the face cream could have effect on such group of people, while not to all people.
Secondly, the marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt may have no causal relationship with the use of Luxess face cream. It is very likely due to the mild soap they used in the morning, while the Luxess face cream has no effect at all. It is also possible that the way they watch face were under instruction which they don’t know before but helps a lot to protect the skin. All these factors can change the condition of one’s face, which ignored by the author.
Additionally, the result of the study was reported by the volunteers themselves, however, the appearance and the feel of one's face may have many other subjective influences. One’s sense can fluctuant by many exterior factors, not to say justice ones own appearance. The improvement of the skin should be tested under a scientific serious strict criterion which has its own standards, rather than one’s assume. Meanwhile, the appearance of the skin also do not necessarily indicate an improvement of condition of the skin, let alone to say an effect brought by the use of Luxess.
In summary, the arguer fails to convince by jumping to a conclusion that fails to hold up to analysis. To strengthen the argument, more researches and clear comparison studies should be done by specialist to identify whether there is a true improvement in one's skin so that to come to conclude that Luxess is truly effective.作者: vickycy6 时间: 2005-8-13 19:11:52
