1、"We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."

The speaker claims that we can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning. Although I agree that some times agreements are useful and needed. However, in my opinion, disagreements are more powerful in developing our knowledge and making better future.

It is certain that agreement sometime is beneficial, as it leads to improvement of confidence and courage. When a young man gains the agreement of the authority of on subject, he or she will be encouraged greatly. Faraday, when he was young he get the acknowledgement of David, and decided to devoted to science. Finally, he did huge contribution to physics and chemistry.

First, I concede that the disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning, especially when the debate decays to attack. Take Boltzmann, the founder of statistical physics, for instance, his work was strongly attacked by his contemporary scientists who disagree with him. After long years been attacked he couldn't bear it again and suicides in 1906, while his work was substantiated by experimental data soon after that.

However, most of the time, the debate are very benefit to the development of both science and society. As disagreement and critics reveals other perspective makes us to think more thoroughly and leas to a sagacious decision. The most famous debate of physics in last century involved two most famous scientists: Einstein and Bohr. Einstein disagreed with Bohr that the current quantum theory (QT) is complete. Einstein insisted that the QT is incomplete, he unsatisfied with the explanation of Bohr on the nature of probability amplitude. He believed that the world should not be explained by randomness probability. He proposed many intelligent ideas to prove his belief, such as "Photon Box", EPR particles - which involve two electrons or other Fermi particles. All these has proved to be profoundly promote/impel the development of modern physics. Nowadays, the EPR has been become very important in many areas including quantum communication, quantum information, quantum computer, etc. In social realm, there are many illuminative examples too.

New ideas are often burst in discussion and debates, especially in the interrelation subjects. It is often that we can see all aspects of one thing, only when debate with those persons hold different idea with us can we think it overall. For instance, the human cloning issue, some scientists believe that this may very help to solve many diseases. However, the opponents propose that human cloning may result in many social problems, ethics and moral problems. After these debates, many governments realize these problems and make laws to inhibit it.
