TOPIC:ISSUE 54 - "History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today."
WORDS:640         TIME:00:45:00          DATE:2005-9-8

Can the study of history only offer them pessimism that knowing about the past is of no significance to assist people to make important decisions today? Facing this complex issue, any extreme response would be improper. And as far as I am concerned, study about the event in the past is able to not only help people to make wise decisions when facing emergencies, but also have a clearer knowledge about the nation they belong to.

Admittedly, in the rapid developing era of the world, the mechanical copy historical examples, without any necessary analysis, would be not better than harm to people when they need to make important decisions. As the situations today are far from similar to those in history, the mind and methods of behaviors of the people have changed a lot. Thus, under this circumstance, just to accept out-of-date ways of dealing with emergencies might have been not different from suicide. For example, even knowing that ancient people turned to witch doctors to cure illnesses, probably none of the modern people would still use this unscientific medical treatment rather than advanced medicine. Therefore, to some extent, as for the limit of technology and science, the events in history would provide little support to modern people, if only be accepted mechanically.

However, the study of history would not be useless, but be crucial to help people decide wisely. And the reasons for my claim lie in some aspects as follows.

First and foremost, the study of history is able to circumvent the trap our ancestors have met. As common sense, it is stupid to get trapped in the same place, so if we have recognize the similar failure our forerunners have made, we would obtain success more efficient or maintain the present good living condition on the basis of less obstacles. For instance, careful study and meditation over the Second World War which led to great amounts of deaths and treasure loss, all the nations in the world should try their best to avoid wars of any form-local or world wide to protect the peace of the world. Consequently, the results of historical study, especially those of historical tragedies, would remind or warn the present people not to commit the same mistake as our ancestors.

What's more, history also endows us useful thinking methods, even though the same thinking methods are not able to lead to further achievement and progress for some limit. Some of the inventions or scientific discoveries would be proved to be of little use of ridiculous from our present sight, whereas with the limited resource, it is a fantasy to make these progresses for our forerunners. Through necessary transformation, the very thinking method, which led to ancient splendid achievements, would be still very useful in the modern daily life. For instance, the ways of irrigation near the Nile offers a good example of how to utilize natural resource efficiently and harmlessly.

In addition, the study of history is a most efficient class to teach the culture of the nation people belong to. In other words, history soothes the people and avoids the culture famine. Consider, for example, Chinese history is replete with countless greatness in almost every field. The great four inventions of ancient China show the great advancement of technology of Chinese people; the masterpiece-"Dream of a Red Chamber" is not only the deputy of developed literature but also the reflection of feudalism in ancient China. The study over all these above is able to, at least, bring an approximate image of Chinese culture, and the further and more careful would dig more cultural wealth.

To sum up, facing the problem that how to treat history, people should put deep and full analysis upon history, and as a result of the necessary cost-the analysis, history gives more nutrition than people could ever imagine.

修改后的第3段:However, as the development of human society and the world follows the law- from quantitative change to qualitative change, there would not be such severe changes in most cases. So, to some extent the development of human history is a circulation. Accordingly, the study of history would quite useful when dealing with the cases that ever happened or only changed a bit, and further be crucial to help people decide wisely. And the reasons for my claim lie in some aspects as follows.
