Last week, we reported on the same day two separate incidents involving young people in our area.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Department had arrested three teenagers for a crime spree that ranged from vandalism to burglary and from stolen vehicles to hot checks.
Aurora police Chief Rick Batson had sought charges against 22 Aurora High School students stemming from a series of incidents during and after the Jan. 20 basketball game with Mount Vernon.
While they are different kinds of incidents, the common thread is the age of the suspects, all in their mid to late teens. As the father of a teenager myself, I believe two things:
1) The vast majority of youth are good and kind people who, while perhaps guileless at times, are far smarter and more savvy than those of the previous generation at that age. Anybody who has spent time with Tomorrow’s Leaders Today will, I’m sure, back me up.
2) Many good teens have bouts of knuckleheadedness that defy description or prediction.
Still, these incidents seem out of place, a kind of disturbing warp in the normal order. We, as parents and community members, I suggest, must take some responsibility for mass incidents of this kind.
What have we set up ... what haven’t we set up ... what message has failed that would (allegedly, of course) send these kids screaming across the boundaries to curdle the milk of human kindness?
It is worth a ponder or two.

首先很谢谢你得关注。由于我已经考完GRE了，现在记单词的目的只是为了巩固和加深印象，使自己死记硬背的单词真正为自己所用，所以想了这个法子。选词上面，我都是选的自己不熟的词，先自己加以归类，然后再Yahoo上看相关新闻，继而把有助于理解其中某些词的新闻贴上来，争取1~2天之内发一贴。所以资料的选材面比较广，我也不好定死。

The concept of a bi-partisan House committee formed to investigate the

fictions, fabrications and pipe dreams(pipe dream:An unrealistic hope or fantasy) the White House used to justify the invasion of Iraq — weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein's nuclear

weapons program, Iraq's connection with al-Qaida — is worth supporting. The

select committee should also probe the White House's failure to arm U.S.

troops properly, its inability to anticipate the insurgency, and the torturing

of prisoners under American guard. The Bush administration's odoriferous Iraqi

misadventure could use a good airing out. Impeachment, however, should be left

out of the equation.
Representative John Olver is one of 26 Democrats who have co-sponsored the

measure, in which President Bush would face impeachment charges should he be

found by the committee to have "manipulated" pre-war intelligence on Iraq.

Whether Mr. Bush was motivated by criminal intent or incompetence doesn't

change the fact that the president will never be tossed from office by a

Republican Congress, and the impeachment effort will distract Democrats from

the important task of offering an alternative to the White House's simplistic,

shortsighted Iraq policy.

If the interview room at the Oscars had been a movie set, that's what you

would have heard on Sunday night when "Crash" was named best picture. Instead,

there was a collective gasp and then the mad clacking of a hundred reporters

Many of the reporters backstage at the Oscars had already written that the gay

love story "Brokeback Mountain" would win best picture. That's not because it

was their personal favorite - although in my case it was - but because the

bookies who do this stuff for a living said so.

And that's why I was already starting to analyze what that victory meant when

the prediction came crashing down. I was going to write that the storyline at

this year's Oscars was diversity. Ang Lee was the first non-white guy to win

best director. "Tsotsi" was the first South African production to win best

foreign-language film. Another contender in that category was from a new

country called Palestine.

Salmonella poisoning, dysentery, the plague, typhoid fever, and a number of other serious ailments are caused by a diverse group of bacterial pathogens that have one thing in common: They all use the same syringe-like system to infect their hosts. Known as a type III secretion system, this trait allows bacteria to inject virulent proteins straight into the cells of the organism they‘re infecting. Now, Rockefeller researchers have uncovered the first structural similarity shared by these disparate but virulent proteins, a similarity that may help direct future antibiotic research.

In 1969, an obscure Republican political strategist named Kevin Phillips

published a nerdy, statistics-laden book titled The Emerging Republican

Majority that offered a Machiavellian analysis of how the GOP could use the

issue of race to win over working-class Democrats and ensure future political

dominance. In the years since, almost every aspect of that description has

been turned around. Phillips long ago left behind both obscurity and

conservatism, becoming one of our most ubiquitous political commentators and

one of the most left-wing. His biennial books have become illogical, dizzying

screeds. And his diagnoses, predictions, and advice to Democrats have been

consistently, embarrassingly wrong.

Phillips' faults are on full, gaseous display in his latest jeremiad, American

Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money

in the 21st Century. The book was No. 1 on Amazon before being released and

has already been widely praised by liberals, who continue to welcome Phillips

as a fresh convert to their side decades after his defection from the right.

Alan Brinkley, a distinguished historian who should know better, last week

praised American Theocracy in the lead essay of the New York Times Book Review

as "frighteningly persuasive" and "a harrowing picture of national danger …

that none should ignore." Time calls the book "indispensable."

Some of those who enjoy fat salaries from jobs, like in "high" finance, would want us to look at it this way, and ignore the burdens faced by working families which are expected to carry all the pains and costs of so-called "restructuring" rendered necessary by global free trade. On the other hand, it is equally unacceptable to consider those emerging economies which have become champions in the league of world growth, like China and India, as some new "perils". I would say good luck to them in their endeavours and let us see how we can best cooperate with them by creating new ideas and project proposals that would be to the mutual benefit of all sides concerned.

John McGahern, who has died from cancer, aged 71, was arguably the most important Irish novelist since Samuel Beckett. Although he had many rivals in the field of short story writing (most notably William Trevor), his novels The Barracks (1963), The Dark (1965), The Leavetaking (1974), The Pornographer (1979), Amongst Women (1990), shortlisted for the Booker prize, and That They May Face the Rising Sun (2002) constitute a portrait of a society moving from insular repression (in the earlier writing) towards freedom and self-confidence (in the latter).

Even in the mid-1960s the social and cultural stigma attached to the author of a banned book was enormous. Moreover, McGahern had, in 1965, also committed the solecism of marrying a Finnish theatre director, Annikki Laaksi, which had contributed to the refusal of his trade union to fight his case. He later recorded that he was told: "If it was just the auld book, we might have been able to do something for you, but with marrying this foreign woman you have turned yourself into a hopeless case." Having won the fellowship and the memorial award commemorating the Irish writer George Russell, he joked that he was the nearest thing to an "official" writer, and that a ban was therefore that much more bizarre. It certainly made him a cause celebre, with many Irish writers campaigning for his
reinstatement. Beckett offered assistance, but McGahern declined.
