TOPIC:ARGUMENT 111 - The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of marketing at Dura-Sock, Inc.

"A recent study of Dura-Sock wearers suggests that our company is wasting the money it spends on its patented "Endure" manufacturing process, which ensures that our socks are strong enough to last for two years. Dura-Sock has always advertised its use of the "Endure" process, but the new study shows that the average Dura-Sock customer . Furthermore, Dura-Sock customers surveyed in our largest market, northeastern United States cities, say that they most value Dura-Sock's stylish appearance and availability in many colors. These findings suggest that Dura-Sock can increase its profits by discontinuing its use of the "Endure" manufacturing process."

This argument simply proposes that the Dura-Sock Company could reduce money on advertisement of "Endure". To substantiate this recommendation, the author quoted a recent study and a survey. However this argument is deficient in logic and not cogent.

A threshold assumption upon which the recommendation depends is that the consumers are no longer concerned with the "endure" of socks. The quoted study did not inform us that how many people participate in and whether this study is randomization. If this is not the case, we have good reason to doubt if the sample is sufficient in size and representative enough to reflect the general thinking of consumers as a whole. Even if the study is of validity, the fact that consumers actually purchases new Dura-Socks every three months could not substantiate that the consumers no longer emphasize the use of the "Endure" process. Perhaps the consumers purchase the socks for their friends' birthday as gifts rather than wearing themselves. Or perhaps because of its use of the "Endure" process consumers convince the high quality of Dura-Sock. Without acknowledging and ruling out such possibilities, it is subjective to recommend discontinuing its use of the "Endure" manufacturing process.

In addition, based on the survey in northeastern United States cities, the author unfairly assumes that consumers tend to Dura-Sock's stylish appearance and availability in many colors. First the author fails to tell us how the survey conducted and whether the survey is random sampling. For that matter, if the author only investigates young ladies who are inclined to popular styles, the result of the survey could not represent the most consumers' attitudes. From my point of view, the author should provide us the gender, age and average incomes of the respondents. Without such information, the survey could not represent the whole consumers' views. Second the author fails to inform us that whether control procedures that should be included in survey to rule out or minimize the effects of extraneous variables such as weather condition were provided in this survey. If not, the result of the survey lacks of credibility.

In conclusion, the author should provide more detailed information about the study and the survey to substantiate the validity of such evidence. Moreover the author should find out the direct evidence to demonstrate the unnecessary use of the "Endure" manufacturing process.
