“Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life”
While we are enjoying the benefits and comforts that technology has brought to our life, a
sense of insecurity arises alongside. The statement above well represents the condemnation
of some people toward technology. In my opinion, technology is innocent; both its merits and demerits are due to people who create it and use it in substance. Whether it has created
more problems or solved, is determined by people.
Obvious are the advantages and disadvantages of the era of technology now that we have been in it for long. For one, human's life-span is extended because of the ever-improving
technology of medical treatment: we can now fight off some of the diseases that used to be
fatal in the past, like tuberculosis; and we have become stronger in combating some others,
though not completely defeated, like cancer and diabetes. For another, people's lives are
now far more exciting then ever before: we can go to almost anywhere on the earth we wish to go to, even the opposite of the globe, thanks to the technology of transportation; we can communicate with people around the world instantly, by the aid of Internet technology; the confine of time and space is almost eliminated. Meanwhile, we are suffering from more. The exhaust of automobiles has notably decreases the number of the days we can see the blue-sky; thousands of workers have to confront the fortune of being laid off since technology has made their work unnecessary any more. While we are better off, we are worse off at the same time.
However, we should not blame technology for these drawbacks more than we should simply sing high of the improvement. Technology is only something that are being developed, and utilized by human. What effect there would be is totally in control of human ourselves. One
illuminating example is the use of nuclear. While it is becoming an important substitute to
the traditional resources, such as coals and water power, and are millions times more
efficient in producing electricity, which lights up the way to solve the problem of resource
exhaust; it is meanwhile a biggest threat to the safety of people. Nuclear weapons, also,
has become the greatest concern of the international world, being the fuse of several wars,
for instance, Iraq War. The explosion of the nuclear bomb in Hiroshima, 1945, is still a
nightmare of many people who were fortunate enough to survive in that disaster, as well as
unfortunate enough to suffer from the both terrible memory and the radioactive effect which
is still unclear. Then could we announce that it is the responsibility of technology itself
that leads to all this merit and demerit? Absolutely not. It is the people who dedicated in
turning the enormous energy of nuclear reaction to people's use that makes the nuclear
technology beneficial; on the other hand, it is those who utilize this technology in the
field of military affairs that ultimately bring the disaster.
Therefore, when we feel like criticizing technology for the problems it has created and the
damage of the quality of our life, we should realize that we are, as a matter of fact,
criticizing ourselves. We can choose the role of technology on our own. If we focus all our
effort in making better use of technology, say, to produce more delicate videos with the
camera instead of detecting the privacy of other people with it, or to research on the
methods to improve the environment, rather than discarding the waste of modern industry into
the nature. Then we can expect for a really better life.
In closing, this statement contains an issue far more beyond a simple debate on whether
technology has made more contribution or done more harm. It is the people who determine the final conclusion.作者: yuchen 时间: 2006-2-27 11:31:10
