ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
Having viewed the existing and prevailing system and standard in our society, I strongly support the author's statement that our society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect.
To begin with the state, it is necessary to clarify the definition of the intellect. Besides the reasoning and other cognitive skills, the ability to skeptical thinking and the creative thinking should also be included in the intellect range.
In the education and academic of our society, we do really understand the true meaning of the intellect. We misunderstand the intellect for the high grade and abundance of the research paper. In the face of the paper and the grade are the parts of the fathom for the intellect, we quest the result at expense of neglecting the reasonable methods to achieve the goal. It result in the pursuing the fruit by mechanical memory and the abusing of the scientific data. Moreover the society encourages the scientist to pursue only the utilitarian aspects which can be contribution to the society rather than some unique and special one. It impedes the development of the cognitive ability of the scientist and also the students who are too cautious under the weight of the pressure of the realistic requirement. The view leads us to a near-sight world in which we lack of the creative thinking. And the yielding to the authority without the reasoning and skepticism constrain us in a tiny shell
At the same time in the economic field, the merchants neglect the cognitive value in the light of the profit. Sometimes the reasoning and the creative thinking may cause an opposite result due to the lack of the experience. This is permitted at the process of the cognitive thinking. But the merchant will not allowed this happen. So in the produce of the product, we can see the duplication of the same part of a machine at the product line in the plant and the mimicking of a successful executing model.
And the neglecting of the intellect can also be found in the political field. People overemphasis the influence of the model, and lack the skepticism toward the leader and the system. The idolatrous behaviors of a political figure often cause the conflicts between the different parties and the horrible movement. And the Culture revolution in the 1970 in China is a case of point. To conform to the standard, and to cater the political necessary the political give up the intellect. In some part of the China, because of the lack of the environment consciousness, the officials permit some ridiculous and unreasonable schemes to develop the economic. To some extent, the deforesting, desertification and the sand storm are partly attributed to these policies. Only by utilizing the resource without the reasonable weighting the loss and the gain can not a country develop.
