今年春天的时候,答应过和另外一位好友合写一份申请北美生物信息学或者计算生物学博士班的指南。其实说是指南也算不上,只不过是想借此机会,抛砖引玉,提供一些自己的经验罢了。后来,朋友由于忙着写毕业论文,不得不搁浅一阵,再加上自己忙于一些其他的事情,也一拖再拖。
( a5 k* j) Y) U3 s前几天收到几个朋友的电子邮件,询问进展如何,想想别人还惦记在心里,也快到暑假了,申请2006年的秋季的同学可能也开始做一些前期的准备了吧,于是决定从今天开始,每天写一些,发在这里。8 V2 i, t; j3 T; B: K- k5 ?! E
这份指南是写给有计算机或者数学,统计背景,准备从事用计算的方法来研究生物问题的同学。指南首先会推荐两篇介绍生物信息学发展的文章,让对这个领域不熟悉的同学有个大概的了解。接下来,会分别介绍一些值得推荐的博士班项目。不过,各位申请的同学还有很多具体而烦杂的工作需要做,上网查询学校专业信息,了解具体研究方向是否让你感兴趣等等。3 N& ]5 u$ c2 {

在北美,生物信息学被称为Bioinformatics,类似地,不少大学还建有Computational Biology(计算生物学), Computational Molecular Biology (计算分子生物学), Systems
) p. I$ f  K' D4 t% u2 A) VBiology(系统生物), Genomics (基因组学), Biomedical Science (生物医学),0 ~  A0 Q# Q- P* H, ]) c: _
QuantitativeBiology(数量生物)等专业。个中的区别是有的,取决于不同的研究课题和方向,但是以上的专业大家都可以考虑申请。
+ {; U# x; R7 \" j# J* ]1 p我比较推荐申请单独的博士项目,因为这些项目一般成立的历史不太久,资金比较充
* s# z/ G# w) s& h* X9 \5 |足,所以好申请到奖学金。当然,也可以考虑申请具体的系,如果在这个系有教授从事生

因为生物信息学是一个新兴地交叉学科,和医学,生物结合尤其紧密,所以我打算按
: O9 @  Y/ c0 d% ?9 Y照美国的U.S. News的2006 Top Medical Schools排名介绍各个学校的生物信息学专业。虽然排名固然重要,但是申请的时候一定要结合自己的实际情况和研究方向去寻找自己所满意的学校。$ @. o- @6 h  s; h0 i) k
同时,一些建有生物信息学专业的学校没有医学院,我也会把它们列举出来。最后,我也会列举一些加拿大和新加坡的学校,可能也有申请者会考虑。

(2)GCB Program从2001年开始招生,目前有20个左右的学生。在美国的申请者一般在每年的2月被邀请去面试,在面试后的1到2周内会得到录取结果,不在美国的申请者会通过视频和4个教授交谈。+ h; E, F; x1 B! G2 c
每年招生人数会保持在5个左右,一般发出的offer数会是15个,三倍于5,因为最终有的人会拿到更好的offer去其他的学校。不过我很推荐这个学校,因为每年在1月初的时候它们就决定了邀请去面试人的名单,不象有的学校,拖到4月的时候才出结果。

http://www.compbio.cmu.edu/Faculty/。2005年录取时没有邀请申请者去面试,不知道2006年开始是否会,因为比较流行的方法是从所有的申请者中选优秀的申请者去面试,以便更好地了解,同时也让申请者熟悉自己的program。有的学校,被邀请去面试的申请者就是最后拿到offer的人,有的学校又会从面试者中再挑选一次,最后发出offer。这个program给学生发出offer的同时会按照他的研究兴趣分配一个initial advisor,学生有自由换老师,最后会得到导师所在学校发的学位。就这个program一开始就给学生定下一个导师,我持保留意见,比较普遍的做法是新生第一年会在三个不同的实验室去做rotation,完成之后再定下导师。不过这个program也刚刚成立,可能有的规定也会变化。有的人也认为一开始定下一个导师也有它的好处。
