TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 486          TIME: 0:40:11          DATE: 2006-7-25

Scandals, reported by the media, can provide us with a totally different view about the dark side of famous people or institution. In my analysis, these new point of views benefits the society in some ways but they sometimes bring problems to us since everything has its two sides.

In academic areas, the revealing of scandals will keep researcher alert that they should behave themselves in any fields of study by avoiding invading other people's rights. Plagiarism, quite familiar with us, is bad for the atmosphere of academic fields, this kind of scandals should be reported in order to prevent more such actions. Another example concerns with ethical problem was the scandal of Stanford prison experiment. The professors doing this experiment were seriously and widely criticized for they made the prisoners suffered from sadistic and humiliating. Even if their research are of value, but their behavior hurt other people's psychological feeling. If this kind of scandals was not criticized, scientists can also do anything they like such as cloning human being because they never have the pressure from the public.

Scandal in economic field also have great value. It helps to compel leaders of companies to be honest in the society. One well-known example is the event of Enrron. As one of the world's well-known company, it was exposed to the public that in many years, Enrron is in deficits although it appears to be gain profits. Such dishonesty destroyed the company and leaders related to this event were heavily punished and their fame were totally destroyed. In this, people learn from such teach to obey the rules in economic world.

However, some scandals are meaningless. It is everyone's curiosity that stimulates the media to search as much scandal as possible in order to attract people's eyes. Our media are compelled by the profits that may gain from such hot spots. Scandals on celebrities' personal lives are revealed. Frankly speaking, these things are of no value because we should care more about their performance in their jobs, we have no right to know too much about other people's personal life, so do celebrities. Furthermore, some scandals are even created without realistic. In this, such scandals may hurt those who are reported. It is quite possible that there will be a shadow in their heart and from them on, they will not be free to do anything, including their jobs. To this point, scandals are harmful and our media should not do this anymore.

From what has been discussed above, we can safely arrive at the conclusion that whether a scandal is valuable should be judge by our careful thinking. We should not rely so much on our media to do the thinking for us for they are not actually the thinkers but benefactors from our lack of thinking. Once a scandal is reported, we should think for a few minute before we response to the event.
