"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

I fundamentally agree that arts would reflect the hidden ideas and impluses of a society in that our forefathers created brilliant art civilization by whom the society was propeled along the path of advance to the greatest social upheavel. These art works contains our ancestor's cogitation about the law of the social development. Hence arts serve as a mirror which refracte the secret ideas and impulses of a society. However, sometimes minority of art works bear no meanings, even unfavorable information, that they would distort our sight and mind for doing research in society.

Art, as we know, is the essence of human intellect which hold abundance of characteristics for a special era. By research the art we could unearth those unknowns of a society in a historical context in that influenced by the subliminal rules of one specific society the artists would instill their works with the consciousness of the hidden ideas and impulses of that society. Ostensibly, the art works would reflect the populace's preferences and their emotions, while from the internal world it could bring light for us to discover the trend of the society. For example, many Native American Indians expressed themselves with their artwork carved into totem poles. This is kind of expression of worship to the awe-inspiring nature that different figures in on the totem poles stand for different culture and custom backgrounds between Indians tribes. One tribe might exhibit eagle worship for its acute sight and dexterous flight, while another revere horse for its running power and endurance. Such kind of art form of totem which represents one tribe could reveal the behind desire and motivation of the worship.

Another suitable case would be the literary works. The fact that most of these works are fictional would not impede us interpreting the concept and inspiration of the society in which the author produce the works. In China, the most famous literary works are Tang poems which stress on alliteration and highly accuracy that implicitly express the poet's mood. Many of these poets had suffered from political burdens and other persecutions that only by poems could them imply their view of the society. Hence, while reading their poems, on the surface we could interpret the custom and ethics of the society of their era; however, the pattern of the hidden thoughts and impetus of the society would be grasped with carefully appreciation of the inner meaning of the poems. With the discussion of these two cases we may arrive at the point that arts could probably reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society for the reason that they are quintessences of human civilization which witness and record the development of the society.

Yet we should wary that some kinds of arts, fraught with spiritual morbid trashes, would distract us astray from understanding our society. For instance, nowadays some musics are filled with decadent thoughts and their lyrics are coarse that these bungled arts would mislead the youth to give them the illusion that the society is irremediable. In my daily life experiences, I notice that most of the rap songs express ideas about sex, violence, money worship, and other immoral behaviors which contradict the orthodox opinions of the society. Besides, some movies, TV programs and the forth would also illustrate this trend. While these worthless, even deleterious "arts" can not be representative of the essence of the ideas and impulses of the society, however on the contrary, they would threat the stableness and harmony of it. Hence, we should keep vigilant of these art rubbishes for the reason that they would always blind our sight and distort our mind.

In sum, to some degree, the statement of the function and effectiveness of arts in revealing the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society is correct. Nevertheless, we could better interpret the essence of our society from the perspectives of the art works' authors those who had profound comprehension of the society. Yet art trashes should be avoided and erased in that they could not be representative of the thoughts and motivations of the society; even worse, they may serve as obstacles which hamper the progress of understanding the society.

The speaker asserts that the arts reaveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. In my view, it unfairly generalizes about art. The modern architecture can reveal social ideas and impluses while, in terms of literature, it reflects both social ideas and impluses and the writers' personal emotions and ideals.

Consider the massive mushroom-like, so irregular whiplash curve and geometry structure of Metropol Parasol in Spain. This unique and sensual architecture is an inspiring combination of modern architecture, a source outside the merely rational faculties, and the ingenious computer-desgin softwares. It refuses to be one thing--or to serve one purpose, which reflects the popular ideas of multifunction and creativity like computers. In addition, its whimsical structure made possible by computers, be it the shape of mushrooms, or trees, or umbrellas, or clouds, reflects modern concerns for technological progress, and their future trends of architecture.

In the aspect of literature, Romanticism is a good example in point. The most important impetus of the Romantic Movements was the French Revolution in which King Louis XVI was beheaded and the monarchy was abolished in France. During this period of time, two influential books: Thomas Paine's "Rights of Man" which justified the revolution and William Godwin's "Inquiry Concerning Political Justice" reflected the enthusiastic support of English liberals and intellectuals for the French Revolution. These books revealed the social ideas and impulses for ideals--liberty, equality, and fraternity.

However, one should not overlook the pensonal emotions envoked by the writers. One prominent characteristic of Romanticism literature was "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings". Unlike neoclassical literature which was about other people, much of romantic poetry represented the poets themselves. Romantic poems take as their subject matter the experience, thoughts and feelings of the individual writer. These writers, such as Wordworth, Keats, Shelley laid emphasis on the emotion and untrammelled imagination and maintained that the genuine or the finest passages of poetry, arising from impulse, were the products of an unconscious creativity.

In sum, Romanticism literature is, to some extent, a combination of social ethos and personal emotion. While modern architecture with the aid of computer technology mirrors the social ideas and impluses
