issue 26 "Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."
Preservation of historic building is always one of the hottest issues nowadays. Some people like the speaker insist on taking the precedence of modern development over preservation. In my opinion, however, the historic buildings are of great value to us in some aspects and not contrary to modern purpose as the speaker takes for granted.
First of all, some historic buildings are resources that are almost unable to be restored from destruction. The destruction may cost us the lost of the cultural heritage for ever. So far, we are unaware of the structure of some historic sites. It is still a secret of how they were built up by the engineers and architects long before. Consider, for example, the pyramids in Egypt. When the modern scientists are appreciating such a wonder, they still have no idea of the way in which the huge rocks are piled up so high by our ancestors without gaps between the rocks. Moreover, without bonds like cement we use today, we are now still unable to imagine the way used by ancestors of Egyptian to resist leakage in pyramids. If the pyramids are destroyed for modern purpose, we would have no chance to restore the wonder in the future, since there are no records in history of their architecture structure and the way they were build up.
Secondly, the historic buildings, as a kind of memory from our past, are valuable这个我觉得和上一段有点重复了 and educational. Actually, they can bring us a good business. As found in a travel industry survey, more than 40% of Americans enjoy their leisure time in some travel to a historic place -- a building, battlefield or historic community, and nearly 40% more time is spent by these people than typical traveler. Serving more as traveltour is also ok attractions, this kind of historic place would probably revitalize the traditional commercial district around it. Sometimes, the historic buildings as emblems of a city or a civilization are educational and serve as a symbol of value system helping us to maintain our cultural identity. For example, we always regard the Statue of Liberty in New York the spirit of United States on behalf of the belief that we are born equal. It has encouraged so many Americans to fight for liberty in the history of United States and attracted many people from other countries to this new world for their dreams. 这段的TS是说有教育意义吧,我觉得如果要说商业,你可以说下人们去历史建筑参观的意义在什么,把它和有教育意义扣在一起
Finally, the speaker takes the historic buildings in contrary to modern purpose for granted. A recent study report from Japan tells us that some historic places are still safe and not as susceptible to earthquake or hurricanes as modern apartments.这个和保护历史建筑有什么关系?难道历史建筑只是因为不符合现代安全的建筑标准了而要拆除了,我觉得应该区别有价值的历史建筑和老建筑 In other words, the elegant style of the remained architecture for us does not necessarily cost the practical value of the buildings. Moreover, demolition and rebuilding may cost us even more than preservation of the historic sites. In this aspect, a case of public school system in Chicago shows that renovation of facilities would cost $25 less per square foot than bare-bones new construction. Since preservation may be cheaper than demolition and the historic building is still of practical value to us, it can be used for modern purpose without new danger from hazards like asbestos and lead paint introduced by new construction.
In conclusion, the historic buildings which serve as a kind of memory of our mankind are of great value to us and our descendants. Since we can still apply them to practical use nowadays, why must we destroy the record of our past making the work of ancient talent craftsmen completely out of our sight for ever?最后一句话好象太绝对了一点吧 |
