Sir Francis Bacon once said," Knowledge is power". Obviously, this motto is right beyond doubt. After academic study in various disciplines, both in art and in science, we can acquire abundant knowledge in the subjects that we are interested in. Therefore, after the study of an academic discipline we have a different world view and consider our surroundings in different aspects, based on which human beings can make some progresses which lead to significant changes in human society.
First, the study of academic disciplines can broaden our horizon. The study of an unfamiliar subject is just as a travel to an unknown city. Before visiting an unfamiliar city, people who always dwell in their local places usually have a constrained view toward the world, and they may be conceited, presumptuous or fatuous and hold an incorrect view about the world. However, after the travel to a grand city they may be surprised and they usually allured by the outside world and they would consider their hometowns is not as good as before, however, their hometowns remain the same as they used to be. Similarly, academic study has the same effect to help us broaden our horizon and we become well informed after academic study. After the study of music, we can appreciate the master piece vary from Beethoven’s symphony to the Beatles’ rock music, after the study of algebra, we can solve some sophisticated math problems and enjoy the pleasure brought by this magic discipline.
What’s more, after our study on a discipline, we may see the same unchanged problem in a different and much profound aspect. For instance, ever since thousands of years ago, people began to study the skills of producing ironware and put them into practice in everyday life. However, the utilization of ironware was confined in a certain field. On the contrary, nowadays, the skills of producing ironware have been becoming more and more sophisticated and the ironware produced nowadays enjoys long longevity and excellent mechanical properties quality and ironware is wildly used in various fields from national defense to everyday life. You may wander how does the skill become advanced and sophisticated? It is as the development of a discipline called heat treatment during which people gradually discover the principles of heat treatment after restless endeavor that numerous kinds of ironware can be widely used. After we studied the principles of heat treatment and realized the function of quenching, annealing, and tempering we can produce high quality ironware use the same material as our predecessors did. Due to the academic study in heat treatment, we can treat the natural material iron in a different way and produce better ironware.
Also, the development of Atomic Theory aptly illustrates the effects brought up by the academic study. As John Dalton proposed the Atomic Theory, people realized that all matter was composed of small indivisible particles termed atoms and as the further study about atom, people are able to realize the composition of materials in microstructure and make profits to all the human beings in everyday life, such as the utilization of nuclear energy in generating electricity.
To sum up, after academic study of a discipline will change our former opinions on the same thing and the study helps us a lot in utilizing the knowledge of such discipline to improve our lives.
