Should all faculty spend time working outside the academic world relevant to the courses they teach, in order to improve their academic quality? The speaker gives us his or her answer that all faculty should be required to do so. I agree with the speaker on that it is necessary for college teachers to do some real-world work related to their professional field to improve theit academic level, however, the author overlooks the differences between different academic displicines and extend the concept to all faculty.

I concede that to teachers of some certain academic fields, to do some work relevant to the courses they teach, is very necessary and of great significance, after all, the purpose of college education is to make students ready and capable to step into the society and adapt to it. In my expericence as a student, faculty who are actively engaged in their fields come to class with fresh and a contagious excitement about the subject at hand. For instance, teachers of business administration should always contact with the society and be ready to accept news ideas and new knowledge, since the field of business administration is largely related to the real world, a 'good' teacher who is very adept and familiar with the in-course knowledge will not always be suitable to apply these knowledge and information into practice. Only by getting in touch with the society and doing relevant work, can teachers improve their quality of instruction and bring fresh ideas to the class teaching.

Secondly, easily can we come up with the ultimate goal of education, when thinking about this issue. It is generally accepted that the goal of education is to bring up a man who is adaptable to real world, a man who has the ability to cooperate with other members of the society and to contribute to the development of society.  By keeping abreast of the changing demands of work as a professional, professors can help students who serious about pursuing a career in that field to make more informed career decisions. What kind of help can a teacher, who is too focused on the textbook to get to know about the changes of society, who knows little about what kinds of qualities and skills a graduate should be provided with, give to the students who are eager to be informed about any useful career decision information.

Nevertheless, we may not neglect the disadvantages that may come along with working outside the academic world. One remarkable demerit is that outside working will certainly decrease time which teachers used in their academic research. This practice will necessarily lead to their distraction from imparting task and ultimately impair even offset the aforementioned benefits due to the time and energy they must put into the vocation. After all, impartation of knowledge is the ever emphasis of education which should be put overriding priority. Another flaw is that some certian academic fields, such as literature and philosophy, there is no available career relevant to their academic working. The best and only way to improve their academic quality is that to spare no effort to dive into academic research, and only by doing this can they make noticeable achievements in their academic fields.

To sum up, aside from some academic areas in which outside work is either unavailable or unnecessary, students and faculty alike stand everything to gain when faculty enrich their careers by interspersing field work with academic work.
