题目:ARGUMENT39 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Humana College.
"Last year the number of students who enrolled in long-distance degree programs at Omni University increased by 50%. During the same year, Omni showed a significant decrease from prior years in expenditures for dormitory and classroom space, most likely because instruction in the long-distance programs takes place via interactive video computer connections. In contrast, over the past three years, enrollment at Humana College has diminished and costs of maintaining buildings have risen. Thus, to increase enrollment and solve the problem of budget deficits at Humana College, we should initiate and actively promote long-distance degree programs like those at Omni."

The author merely based on the unfounded assumption and dubious evidence makes a conclusion that initiate and actively promote long-distance degree program will increase enrollment and solve the problem of budget deficits at Humana College. At first glance this assumption sounds reasonable, but with deep thinking, the statement suffers from several logic flaws.
In the statement, the author says that Omni most likely because long-distance program (in other words). So we know there must have a lot of other reasons lead to the increasing of Omni, may be there are some famous teachers now joining Omni. Even though it have something relate with founding long-distance programs, Omni and Humana are two different places, the same act may lead to different results in different places. Also, the change of the teaching system happened in last year, we don't know if it available now and the future. The author fails to give a strong support to his conclusion with the arguments.
In addition, the increased number of Omni University students is vague, the author just assumption students increase 50% last year, he does not tell us the base of the Omni students. May be Omni own students also less than Humana now. Significantly, the initiate and actively promote long-distance degree programs not only can not solve the problem of budget deficits but also ebb it. The long-distance degree programs need money. That will lead the budget to be more serious.
In sum, the author fails to support his conclusion use this evidence. If he want to make a strong support to his suggestion, he should give more information about the benefit of long-distance program and the profit it will be made. Also, a statistic with the number of potential students who like long-distance system should be investigated. Beside this information can make more strong support to the author's conclusion.作者: rangen 时间: 2007-3-17 08:55:30
