I basically agree with the statement. Nowadays the society is complicating as a labyrinth with so many sciences tangled together. A well educated people must at least know something abouth them in order to live properly.
Students can not make living solely on theri major fields. Many fields are pure theory, however many commonsense and fundmental knowledges are required. Eg:commonsense knowledge of history and moral.
Learning various courses outside the major fields can results in a better and more enjoyable life.Eg:dabbling in music and literature can yield much fun.
However, one must not go to extremes. Optional courses can not substitute one's major. Students go to university primely for their vocational study.
As long as students can perform well in their majors, more numbers and varieties of courses are encouraged.
