Argument 140
Words: 497       Time: 50 minutes
In this argument, the arguer concludes that a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson should be given to Professor Thomas. In order to prove this conclusion, the arguer reasons Professor' popularity among students and her research abilities. In addition, the arguer points out that without this prize Professor Thomas may leave Elm City University for another college. However, this argument is not convincing as it stands.

In the first place, this argument suffers a hasty generalization. The arguer point out that Professor Thomas should get a salary raise and a promotion just because of her popularity among students and research abilities, but no other professors' conditions are introduced. Maybe there are professors who have more outstanding research ability and should get this promotion. No other professors' introduction to compare, we can not be convinced that professor Thomas is the best to win this promotion.

In the second place, it is not convinced that Professor Thomas is competent the status as Department Chairperson. The popularity among students and research ability do not have cohesive relationship to the position of Department Chairperson. As the Department Chairperson, one must have the ability to govern this department, to lead the subordinate to work effectively, and handle all kinds of affairs properly. Without concrete information about this, we can not accept the conclusion that Thomas is proper for this position.

In the third place, the arguer simply concludes that Professor Thomas is popular among students just reasons that her classes are among the largest at the university. The largest classes do not mean popularity among students. If the courses given by Thomas are compulsory for many students, and some rules are given to students, like absence for class will affects the final score, the students must go to classes and the classes are the largest of course. But this does not mean that Thomas is popular. Only by surveying the students in Thomas' classes can we know whether Thomas is popular among students.

At last, the arguer give a simple worry that Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college without this prize, but no evidence are given to support it. If Professor Thomas is very pleased with her current situation, how does she have the thought to leave for another college. A salary raise and promotion is just a prize which stands for her good performance in the past and can stimulate her to work better. Leaving for another college should consider many factors not just salary and position. If the work condition is worse though there is higher salary, maybe Thomas will not leave for there. So just considering this two aspects, to assert Thomas will leave without the prize is arbitrary

In conclusion, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. Before getting the conclusion, the arguer must give more evidence to prove that Professor Thomas is popular among students, has better ability to get the promotion and can be compensate that position as Department Chairperson.         

Argument 147
Syllabus:
In this argument, the arguer concludes that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months. However, this conclusion suffers several fallacies.
1.       No more information about the survey is given, which can not guarantee the statistical meaning of the survey.
2.       Not all computers fit for the Whirlwind video games which require the most up-to-date computers, and this influence the popularity of them.
3.       The Whirlwind video games introduced several games which directed at people 10 to 25 years old, and this can not be liked by all people.
4.       No other companies are introduced which may give more popular video games to occupy more markets, we are not convinced that the sales of Whirlwind video games will increase dramatically in the next few months.
