Issue84"In any field of endeavor, it is impossible to make a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field."
Living in a fast-paced world, nowadays, we need to master more and more knowledge to deal with everyday affairs. Apparently, new knowledge is so important that we can not overlook it, then, how should we look on achievements made by the proceesors? In my view, the past achievements are as important as the new ones, since we could get large quantities of useful information through those achievements, however, initiative and creativity should be put in the same place with the past achievements.
Admittedly, past achievements are so significant that we need to make good use of them to lay a solid foundation for the experiments made today. We could not deny that exsiting experience and knowledge provide foundation of our knowledge. In science realm, one is more likely to make significant descoveries equipped with a good knowledge of past achievementd, since one could avoid committing the same errors with the predecessors, which could save much time that could be devoted to other meaningful place. "If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants", a saying by Newton, Sir Issac shows the correctness of equipping with a good knowledge of past achievements. In area of arts, the past achievements are essential as well, however, there might be some exceptional cases. Van Gogh is a good case in point. Known as a genius in arts, he was not strongly influenced by past achievements, however, he still became a world-widely famous artist. Then we could figure out that sometimes the past achievements are not necessary if the person is talented. But it is only a few exceptional cases.
What's more, we could be prompted to seek for the truth if the past experience is proved to be wrong. It seems that everyone has a natue to reform the wrong ideas. Then we could get inspiration to improve the wrongly given ideas. For instance, Copernicus figured out the Heliocentric Theory by finding out that the statistics he put down was not coherent with the ones figured out by Claudius Ptolemaeus's theory. Through the example we could see that the wrong ideas could be improved by the people.
Though the comprehension of past achievements are essential, we could not neglect the importance of creativity and reasoning mind. Exceedingly influenced by the past achievements and experience could result in restriction by them, which is not the expectable outcome. As Confucius says that learning without thought is labor lost, while thought without learning is perilous. Without initiative a person was just a machine which could only do the machanical work and the machanical manipulation could not contribute to the success or even make the previous effort in ruin. Without creative mind, in other words, follow the step of previous experience, one could not make significant breakthrough since the senior has already dug out the intention of the staff. Furthermore, in some newly developing realms, such as computer, biochemistry, the creativity is too important to be ignored. Consider that still conducting a research in the same way with the one used in chemistry, not combining bioligy together, one is rarely to succeed.
To sum up, the past achievements and experience should never be neglected, given that experience always put one into a more familiar circumstance and one could make a discovery more easily, however, the creativiy, initiative and reasoning mind are of the equal importance with the experience. Eqipped with creativity, otherwise, too much emphasis on necessity of being influenced by past achievements may lead to restriction by them.作者: krasovsky 时间: 2007-11-13 09:39:05
