Issue 147Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.Time 45mDate 2008-2-20Words610In our time called as the greatest period of human civilization, everything is changing, or rather improving, at a speed we have never seen before: the technology is so advanced that we could send people to outer-space and alter the information contained in genes, the social wealth is so huge that numerous of luxuries could be afforded, the arts are so modernized that we use peculiar textures to create works so abstract and vague one can hardly understand. Naturally, it is also a sad time for those who keep themselves closely in traditions that are sort of conflicting with our current social structures. Because to enjoy the numerous opportunities and improvement of today, we have to walk out of the past and attempt to commit ourselves in the modern life styles. Most obviouslyobvious changes towards modernization in the past few years happened to the developing countries who so deathly desire the modern world full of wealth and freedom. In China, for example, the traditional so-called planned economy has been in transformation after a period of sufferings. Now as China participates in the international business, its people isare experiencing unprecedented prosperity, which can be indicated in its amazing GDP growth rate and ever-increasing market power. The same has taken place in many other countries like India and Brazil who do not tie themselves to the strict abeyance to their traditions, and has already gained success in more advanced societies as Japan, South Korea and Singapore.According to some social experts 这句话有些不对,应该是according to experience of some social experts, the phenomenal achievements in these societies attributed to the transformation of their social structures, including cultures, social norms, moral standards, and most significantly, the function of the market and government. Undoubtedly, it is ridiculous to build the skyscrapers of modern world on the base of a uneducated community where people are still divided into slaves and owners, productions are still organized by blood connections and the basic human rights, freedom, as well as democracy are still unavailable.这例子感觉没在证明什么啊 Under this circumstance, those aboriginal, even inhumane traditions must be totally updated in order to keep with the steps of present-day civilization. 这段似乎没中心句Nevertheless, do we need to abandon all of the past as the price for the threshold of modernization? The question is obvious if we take a look at those most developed countries. Take the US for example, although the history for the mainstream culture of current Americans is not so long, efforts have been exerted in every possible aspect to keep it for today as well as the future. Even the traditions and customs of the origins have been paid great attention to, as in certain states, land, resources and special privileges have been issued to guarantee as much as possible the history heritages for human. In Japan, where people obtained tremendous accomplishment in economy, polity, arts as well as academia, people embrace an unusual enthusiasm for their conventional cultures. And thus they successfully conquered the conflicts between traditions and modernization, making their own contributions to the process of humanity by combining conventions with current achievements. The special yet invaluable Japanese cultures, such as ikebana and Japanese ceramics all add to the human accomplishments of civilization. When asked about the resource for arts, most of the Japanese artists will choose their tradition without hesitation. Therefore, traditions, although may be outdated in certain social aspects, still have values for our future.Overall, although the process of civilization is an constant change and development of the past, we could not simply put our traditions on the opposite position of modernization. With proper employment, traditions could still benefit us in a variety of social angles.
