Obviously, the number of automobile will decrease someday, and it is even possible that automobile will disappear someday, but a 20-years period is definitely not enough for such an improvement. To demonstrate the above viewpoint, we need to consider the following aspects: the improvement of new technologies in the transportation, the current possession rate of automobile, and the tendency of the increase of world population.

First of all, we have not found any feasible alternative of automobile now even though scientists and engineers have worked on such efforts many years. Some may argue that the transportations by airplane, by railroad and by ship have greatly improved in recent years and that the three kinds of transportations have partly replaced the automobile transportation. Nevertheless, the fact is that all the three kinds of transportation and automobile transportation play different roles in the transportation system and will not be replaced by one another.

In the second place, worldwide, the private car possession rate is still very low although such rates in the developed countries such as the United States and the Great Britain are already quite high. As many developing countries keep developing, more and more people are being rich enough to afford their own private car. As a result of the development, the demand of automobile will keep increasing, leading to the increase of the number of automobile.

Finally, according to the population report from the United Nations, the world population will continuously increase in the next 50 years. The increasing population will also lead the demand for automobile to increase in the years to come.

In sum, for the automobile industry, more people there are in the world, larger the market is; more money people have, more affordable they are to buy their own car. Hence, the number of automobile will not drop in the next 20 years.
