The debate whether letting friends make a mistake without helping depends on conditions. In my opinion, if the price of mistake to my friends is too high it is better to giving them suggestions or some help no matter that it may destroy the friendship. Otherwise I will choose to watch them making mistakes.
Firstly, as a friend, I am not able to just wait to see that my friends are committing a big fault which will have a great influence to them. Suppose that I do not warn them when I see this fault. Afterward, if they find that I have done nothing, this will destruct the friendship between me and them. Otherwise, they will thank to me though they will not understand what I have done to them. For example, when I was in college, I asked one of my roommates not to copy my homework. He thought that I was not helping him and copied other's homework. However, just before the final exam, he told to me that I was right because he should not copy.
Secondly, since learning from some less harmful mistakes may be more useful than others' telling or doing, I will choose to see my friends making mistakes other than helping. When encountered the problem, they will cultivate the ability to solve problems. And if I just point out the problem, they will lost the opportunity to solve themselves. For example, some years ago, one of my friends are working on a math homework with me. Then I found that some of his procedures are wrong. At that time I choose to not to tell him. Later, he found that he made a mistake because he found that the work' result is strange. Finally, he found out the problem himself.
In sum, in different situation, I choose different option. If it is very harmful to my friends, I will told it true or do something to help. Else I will let them know the problems themselves.
