题目：ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
不能说是由谁来决定，具体情况具体分析
由于受到知识的限制，同代人往往不能理解。
后代人在一定程度上能更客观
但是每个时代的标准会变化，所以不能笼统的认为谁能决定，可能一个时代的伟大，仅仅是另一个时代的平庸。
In the statement, the speakers claims that only those who live after individuals can decide their greatness rather than their contemporaries can. From my point of view, under some circomstances that the descendents can make evaluation more objectively, however, it is not fare to conclude that who will responsible for deciding the greatness of individual. It will be various in cases.
To begin with, with the limit of the knowledge, the contemporaries may ignore the indivuduals' greatness, since most of the outstanding ideas of the figures may be too complex and hard for the common people to believe. For supporting examples one need look no more than the concept of Continental Drift, suggested by Wegerna in 1912, however, most of the contemporary geologist ridicule this concept, they need the explanation of how a continent can drift as a prerequisite. Until 1950s, the idea become widely accepted for more scientists find ways to explain the movement of continents. In addition, Geaneao Bruno, who was the support of Heliocentric Theory offered by Copernicus, unfortunately, this idea challenged and even opposite to the idea of ancient Rome Church, Bruno was excuted as a heretic. Centuries later, when it is aknowledged universally, that the knowledge about the mysterial cosmos, Bruno's greatness has been recognized sufficiently. In brief, since the value and knowledge will develop along with the society moving forward, the contemporaries can less accurately decide the individual's excellence than the descendents.
What's more, in a sense, those who live after the individuals may regard the achievement of the figures in a view of objectiveness while some contemporaries may judge a person's excellence according to their interests. On the one hand, the contemporaries may regard the seeming outstanding companies leaders as the great people, for their great contribution to the national economy through paying aboundant taxes. This action will in return ensure a high rate of employment and better warefell for the citizens.However, it is not always the case. It is not rare to see some leaders negelects the evironment effects and emphosizes too much on the economic profits which may pose a threat on the stabilable development of the society. While the descendents may hold a nutural attitude when deciding the contribution of the individuals. For instance, when come to Bill Clinton, who has committed a mistake about his inproper relationship with a White House intern, and this almost destoryed his repution then. But people today would not deny the fact that during his presidency, the Unites States enjoys the longest period of economic growth. Besides, Clinton still enjoy a high popularity among the American citizens today. In a objiective attitude, the greatness can be decided to the utmost.
However, in some cases, people in different eras may judge the greatness of individual with different result, since the standard may be various with the development of society. Particularly, with the field as subjective as art, the great creation of an artist in his times can means nothing to later generations. For example, when architectures of Baroque style was previaling in Europe since the late 1700s, and went into its highest development in 1800s, but since then, this style has out of date for the reason that the people later distained its oevrcomplicated decorations, and pursuit the flamboyance too excessively. And thus, they emphasizes less on the excellence of the great architects who represented the Baroque, even if they are spoken highly in their times, due to their great contributions. Therefore, it is more fair that he generation's opinion of evaluation can only serve to express their own attitude, rather than to decide the greatness of individuals.
In summary, the contemporaries may ingore some individuals' greatness, for it may beyond their ability of understanding. But the later generations may also judge the greaness according to their tastes,and thus it is not simply to assert who decides the greatness of individual.
