Issue 38

"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
In this era of rapid developing society especially the progress of television, there is a controversial debate about the educational function of television and books. The author takes for granted that presently reading books is not so important in teaching as before and watching TV can instead of reading books in learning. To make an improper comparison, the invention of television is like the invention of automoblie, can replace walking sometimes.

The allegation seems to be somewhat reasonable at the first place, but taking a further step of evaluating it in different aspects will find that it is not simply the case. Presently the content of television programs is so abundant that we can find nearly all the knowledge. It seems at the same time that when television brings us something useful, television is sometimes like Pandora's box. For instance, even if the content on television is pretty abundant, few of them are focus on education. General speaking, the TV programs are born to make money, and the best way to achieve it is to cater to public curiosity. Which means the majority of the programs are about entertainment and news, although there are few programs about the nature and customs around the world. This render people can learn few things from television. On the other hand, information showed on television can not be controlled by the watcher, which means if we miss some information we can not turn back to it. Finally, sometimes television presents directly image which can not cultivate our independent thought.

On the contrary, watching television sometimes helps us learn faster and more profound than books. For instance, some cartoon can better show the model of atom and how they move. And television can well presented history with affirm proof, which can convince us and educate us with deep impress. For example, when we learn the World War 2 from the history we do not understand how cruelty it is. But when we watch the video about that period of time especially the bloodiness of the fight scene from television, we will remember that period of history forever.

As an old saying in China 'there is everything in the book', books can enrich us a lot. Books are the most significant way for us to achieve knowledge. To some extent, knowledge in the books is endless, which is like the water in the sea. And most of the professional knowledge are only stored in books.

To be certain, both of the books and television have their own merit. But generally speaking, watching TV can not substitute reading books to be a major means of acquiring knowledge.

In this era of rapidly developing society especially the progress of television, there is a controversial debate about the educational function of television and books. The author (statment above) takes for granted that presently reading books is not so important in teaching as before and watching TV can instead of(replace) reading books in learning. To make an improper comparison, the invention of television is like the invention of automoblie, (which can only) replace walking sometimes.(这个比喻很有意思)

The allegation seems to be somewhat reasonable at the first place, but taking a further step of evaluating it in different aspects will find that it is not simply the(that) case(第一句就说了论点比较好吧). Presently the content of television programs is so abundant that we can find nearly all the knowledge. It seems at the same time that when television brings us something useful, television is sometimes like Pandora's box. For instance, even if the content on television is pretty abundant, few of them are focus on education(knowledge). Finally, sometimes television presents directly image which can not cultivate our independent thought.(电视不是一个好的提供知识的渠道,这个论点很好,需要说的再清楚一些)

(这个论点也很好)

As an old saying in China 'there is everything in the book', books can enrich us a lot. Books are the most significant way for us to achieve knowledge. To some extent, knowledge in the books is endless, which is like the water in the sea. And most of the professional knowledge are only stored in books.(acadamic, specific knowledge which can not please the majority)

To be certain, both of the books and television have their own merit. But generally speaking, watching TV can not substitute reading books to be a major means of acquiring knowledge.
