I strongly agree with the assertion that the significant advances in knowledge realm require special expertise from various fields. The world around us presents a seamless web of physical and anthropogenic forces, which interact in ways can be understood only in the context of a variety of disciplines. The two examples involve the field of anthropology and astronomy can aptly illustrate the point.

Consider how a culture anthropologist's knowledge about one kind of ancient civilization is enhanced not only by the expertise of archeologist who unearth the evidence, but also by the expertise of biochemist, geologists, linguist, and even astronomer. For example, the biochemists and forensic scientists can determine the life expectancy, general well-being and the common causes of death of the population through analyzing their hair, nails, blood and bone, and these experts can also ensure the proper preservation of the evidence. Due to the fact that the geologists can identify the source and age of the materials which were used as tools, weapons and structures, the anthropologist can extrapolate about the civilization's economy, trade, work, lifestyle, extent of travel and mobility, and so forth. What is more, the linguists are needed to interpret hieroglyphics and extrapolate from the found fragments of writings. And the astronomer can help us explain the locationlayout of the ancient city as well as the design, structure, and position of monuments, tombs and temples, since the ancients often looked to the stars for guidance in building cities and structures.

The fields of astronomy and universe exploration present us a more striking examples of how expertise from diverse realms is needed to enhance the advance knowledge. As we know, the achievements in the knowledge about the solar system and universe have something to do with the more sophisticated tools for observation and measurement. Telescope technology and measurement of the celestial distance, masses and volumes, and so forth, are the domain of the astrophysicists. These advances are required increasingly sophisticated means of exploration. Manned and unmanned exploratory probes are designed by mechanical, electrical, and computer engineers. And to build and enable these technology require the acumen and savvy of business leaders, mangers and politicians. Even the diplomats can play a role, since the universe plan often needs international cooperative effort from the world's scientists and governments to accomplish. In the end, it is out philosophers that provide the meaning to what we learnt about our universe.

In sum, no area of intellect inquiry operates in a vacuum. Because the science is closely related and we must understand the interplay among the diverse of disciplines to ensure the advance in the certain realm. Moreover, it is our nonscientists who make the science possible, and who bring meaning to what we learn from it.

Is practicality our idol (--one which…) which all powers and talents must serve in today's world? This assertion is valuable in the most realms of human endeavor (while this claim has considerable merits with respect to) including education, art and politics. However, I disagree with (take exception with) the assertion when it comes to the directions of scientific research.

To begin with, the practicality can be regarded as (seems to be) the litmus test for today's education. For example, when (right along with表同时关系)the grade-schoolers are learning the skills about reading and writing, they also are required to understand the computer skills. And our senior and junior schools are increasingly reducingcutting the art course, whose practicality is less than other subjects on the surfaceostensibly. Moreover, more and more college students are majoring in the technologicaltechnical discipline in order to for the purpose ofgainsecure a betterlucrative job when graduating from college immediately. Admittedly, many graduated will advance their studyadvance to graduate-level study, yet the most popular degree is MBA, after all, the business administration presents thoughts on practicality and pragmatism, which revealsthat is accomplishment of the work and paying attention to the bottom line.

Furthermore, practicality also dictates what sorts of art will be produced today. Now that most structures are affected drivenby the factors on function, safety and cost, and only few buildings can be achieved through the blueprint stage. And the content of film and music are completely under the control ofdriven the demographic considerations, which amounts to cater for the tastes of people from 18 to 35 who account for the most CDs and tickets sale. The publishing industry are entirely driven by the potential sale (deliver viable products) of the books in the market, as the books (glut of books …are the evidence that…) on teaching practical method glut among our book store which can prove the point that the publishing industry spares no effort to satisfy the demand on practicality(as well). Nonetheless, it does not mean that the artists cannot create the qualified masterpieces any more, on the contrary there are myriad of independent music labels and filmmakers, it is just that their development does not thrive, and they only constitute(minuscule segment) little share of the market. In the main, today's real-estate developers, entertainment moguls and publishing executives are concerned about(with) practicality and profit instead of the real art value and integrity( not with artistic value and integrity).

Practicality is (the) also the overriding problems in the realm (contemporary politic) of politic. For instance, most politicians are (seem) driven by the interests on being elected and reelected, thereby (rather than by any sense of mission) their short politician career is not some kind of mission, even they cannot feel obligated to their constituency and country. And diplomatic and legal maneuverings and negotiations often seem to meet the need on practicality such as minimizing cost, preserving options and so forth. However, those who agree with the speaker's opinion may claim that the people who sway the masses, incite the revolution and realize the idealism become reality are idealists not pragmatists, considering the America's founders, Martin Luther King, or Mahatma Gandhi and the like are all idealists. And if (had) these idealists only preserved(concerned with) their own short-term interests, not(rather than ) looked for the (notion)belief of a ideal society, it is entirely possible that America and India were British colonies, and African America were still required(relegated) to sit in the back of buses. Although I concede the correctness of this point, these idealists are less ( be few in number) in today's actual occasions.

On the other hand, when it comes to today's scientific research, this claim does not (amount to an overstatement) show practical. In terms of the most common procedures cosmetic, this procedures are completely impractical due to its high risk to our health and the expensive expenditure. Admittedly, today's digital revolution serves the practical concerns, such as communicating and accessing information more quickly and effectively. Moreover, lots of the chemical researches also aim at increasing (providing) the practicality (convenience) and enabling (enhancing) our daily life more comfortable. Yet, in many other areas (respects), the scientific research are not driven by the immediate practicality, but the long-term subjects such as public health, quality of life, and environmental protection.

In sum, practicality may be our idol in the realm of education, art, and politic, but in the case of science field the assertion may not be accepted. At last, query whether the claim begs the question. After all, practicality amounts to far more than meeting the immediate needs, it can also ensure the quality of our future life and our survival as a species.

What is the limit(s) of our duty to save endangered species from extinction? This statement raises a variety of issues about morality, conscience, self-preservation, and economics. On balance, however, I fundamentally agree with this notion that our human beings are not obligated to (need not) take (make) "extraordinary" effortsat expense of money and jobs to save (ensure the preservation) any species in jeopardy.

In my opinion, (as I see it) there are three (fundamental) arguments (for imposing on ourselves at least responsibility) to bolster the point that we should be obligated to protect the endangered species from extinction to some extent. The first has something to do with culpability. According on (to) this argument, it is the anthropogenic events, such as clearly cutting forest, pollution of rivers and streams that contribute to the circumstance in which many species are facing with extinction.(北美的句式是:to some extent endangerment is the result of anthropogenic events such as clear-cutting of forest or polluting of lakes and streams, we humans have a duty to take affirmative measures to protect the species whose survival we have placed in jeopardy) Thereby, to some extent, our beings have the duty to preserve the endangered species.

The second has to do with capability, this argument disregards to the extent which our human beings might (have contributed to the endangerment of a species) give rise to one specie in danger, however (instead), since we are aware of the emergence, know how to take steps to prevent the extinction, and have the ability to achieve the steps, (then) we should (morally obligated to) be responsible to help prevent species extinction. This opinion requires human has affirmative responsibility in preserving the endangered species. (This argument would place a very high affirmative duty on humans to protect endangered species)

The third seems to be appealing (an appeal) to the self-preservation for our own human beings. The animal kingdom is an intricate matrix of independent relationships, in which each species depends on others for its survival. (北美的句式:severing certain relationships, such as that between a predator and its natural prey, can set motion to a series of extinctions that ultimately might endanger our own survival as a species) And if some relationships (for example the relationship between a predator and its natural prey) break down, it will set into motion a series of extinction. Moreover, our own survival will be endangered as a species, although the assertion seems too far-fetched for us now, the environmental experts assure us that the occasion will occur in the long term.(in the long run it is a very real possibility)

On the other hand, there are also two convincing (compelling) arguments to take exception to the foregoing statement. This notion fundamentally stems from(The first is essentially) the Darwinian's argument that extinction result from the inexorable process of natural selection, that is,( in which) stronger species survive while weaker ones do not. What is more, our human beings cannot be exempt from the natural selection. Hence, (accordingly) if we see fit to eradicate some certain species for the purpose of facilitating our human beings, (then so be it, we are only behaving as animals must, Darwin would no doubt assert) the action should present justifiable, as the Darwin’s claim that we only did as animals must.

The second argument, (and the one that I find most compelling) which I regard to be the most convincing, is appealing (an appeal) to logic over emotion. It is scientific fact that thousands of species disappear from our world every year, and most of them are ascribed to the natural force instead of anthropogenic factors. After all (in any event), it is (far beyond) out of our ability to save each endangered species. Nonetheless, (北美句式:By what standard, then, should we decide which species are worth saving and which ones are not?) what standards should be determined what sorts of animals are worth preserving? In my opinion ( in my observation), we (tend to favor animals with human-like physical characteristics and behavior) are prefer saving the animals whose appearances and behavior are like us human beings, and this thoughts can be understood (this preference is understandable) , since(after all) the dolphins are more(endearing) lovely than bugs, yet, (北美句式:there is no justification for such a standard) this standard does not has rational reasons to support. Therefore, it is more reasonable (make more sense) for us to make a decision depending (based) on our own economic interests, in other words, we should take less precedence on the species whose preservation require more money and investment.(北美句式:the more money and jobs it would cost to save a certain species, the lower priority we should place on doing so

All in all, (the issue of) saving endangered species is a complex question, which needs the subjective judgment on morality and the value of a species, thus there are no easy answers or certain answers. However, according on the aforementioned factors, we should take priority to considering our own interests rather than the vague notion about morality when it comes to protecting the endangered species. In the final analysis, we should take measures to save the endangered species at a point when it becomes critical for our own survival, in accordance with Darwin's notion of natural selection.

The speaker asserts that using public source to support the art is unjustifiable when there is
(where) anyone goes without food, job, and the ability to survive(basic survival skills), due to the fact that art is not the fundament needs for our humans and the government cannot be relied on(trustworthy) when it comes to the motives and direction on bolstering art, thereby, (
北美句式: it might be tempting to agree with the speaker on the basis that )the speaker's assertion may be accepted by people easily. Nonetheless, the speaker overlooks the economic interests and other societal benefits (that accrue) when the government assumes an active role on supporting art.

The potential rationale of the speaker's assertion might is that the importance of the diversity of art pales in the importance of food, clothes, shelters (北美句式: the implicit
rationale behind the speaker’s statement seems to be that cultural enrichment pales in importance compared to food, clothing, and shelter.
which is undoubted fact that the later ones are basic needs for our humans. After all, a hungerstarving one would prefer a outstanding painting to a poorbad meal? Hence, accordingly I concede that it is properappropriate to takeassign priority to the pressing social problems over art when it comes to using the public source. However, to delaypostpone the art funding until we eradicate completely unemployment and hunger may seem that the art funding cannot be established forever. Any informed person who believes otherwise is envisioning a pure socialist in which the government can meet all the citizens' demands, the thoughts amount to fantasy.

It might also be tempting to agree with the speakers on the basis that the art patronage is notneither appropriate andnor necessary function for our government. This argument has considerable valuemerit on three respects. First, it is inappropriateill-conceived to relegate the decision and option about the art funding for tofew(a handful of) bureaucrats who may make their decision according on their own opinion(quirky notions) on art and be affected(susceptible to ) easily by the influence-peddling. Secondly, the social charity (appear to be)presents alive and well today, for example, the public broadcast can survive and even thrive under the donations of the private foundations and individual year after year. Thirdly, the government funding requires large amounts of tax dollars from our pockets, leaving us less disposable dollars with which to support the arts directly and efficiently than any bureaucrat ever could.

On the other hand are two compelling arguments that the public to support art is desirable, whetheror not the unemployment and hunger can be eliminated or not. One such argument is that we actually help to solve the social problems by allocating the public source to art. For example, considering the Canadian film industry which (is heavily subsidized by) gain the heavy investment from the Canadian government, (and which provide countless jobs for film-industry workers as a result) the benefits resulting from it reveals a myriad of jobs for the film workers can be offered. Moreover, the Canadian government also provides various incentives for American film makers to produce films in Canada, it is the incentives that stimulate (sparked a boon for) the economics, job growth, and the wealth which can be applied to education, job training, and social programs. The Canadian example can clearly prove (is proof) the point that supporting the public arts can help to solve the social problems which the speaker is concerned with.

The second argument has to do with the function and ultimate objectives of the public arts. As long as we, art can improvelift our spirit level and put us in touch with our own feelings, defects, and fates, in a word, with our humanity. With an increasing (heightened) sensitivity to our human condition, we become more other-oriented, less self-centered, more giving-ourselves. In other word, our society are becoming more charitable in which people are more willing to offer help to those who are less fortunate than us in which the speaker is concerned. Of course, the speaker may argue that we actually do
(disservice) harm to others when we are helping them, (by enabling them to depend on us to survive) because it may contribute to the fact that they will become dependent on us instead of themselves. Yet, (
北美句式:at the heart of this specious argument lies a certain coldness and lack of compassion that, )from this heart of this specious argument can we see a certain coldness and lack of compassion, in my view, that should be eliminated in any society. Moreover, this argument may give rise to the political, philosophical, and moral issues which this brief issue cannot deal with (address).

In sum, the beneficiaries of the public arts funding are not limited to the elitists who wander through big-city museums and attend symphonies and gallery openings, as the jobs for artists which the public arts created, supporting the public arts can also provide countless for others who depends on the lovely and thriving art industry, and it is the culture that cultivate the charitable heart for the hungry, the helpless, and the hapless.

1# justdoit!

In general, I agree with the speaker's assertion that intense media scrutiny nearly always contributes (serves) to diminish
the reputation of the social potential
(would-be) heroes, for the reason (
北美句式:that it seems to be the nature of the media to look for ways to demean public figures—whether heroic or not) that the public, whether heroes or not, will be demeaned by the media out of its natural. Moreover, although our heroes explain
(vindicate) themselves and maintain (restore) their reputation in the isolated case, in my observation, these cases are exceptional ones to the general rules( that slandered, the reputation of any public figure, heroes or otherwise, is forever tarnished) , the reputation once slandered of the public, heroes or otherwise, cannot be restored forever.

The chief reason why I generally agree with the speakers has to do withthe forces that motivate the media in the first place the motivations of the media which consist of profit-seeking entities, whose ultimate subjective is to maximize profits for the shareholders or other owners. Moreover, our corporate culture has
(sanctioned) accepted the subjective by codifying (it as a fiduciary obligation) it as a truth. For better or worse, our social viewers, readers, listeners find information about the defect and other negative characters, especially for our public figures, (far more compelling ) than their virtues and achievements(accomplishment). In short, our people prefer (love a good) scandal (
北美句式: one need no further than the newsstand, local television news broadcast, or talk show to find ample evidence that this is the case) which can be proven by myriad of audiences on the newspapers, the local television news, and the talk show programs. Thereby,(北美句式: in order to maximize their profits the media are providing what the public demand media scrutiny of the public figures that severe to the reputations.

The second reason why I fundamentally agree with the assertion is that again for better or worse, the intense media raises a presumption

the supposition
(presumption) that provided by the media scrutiny, for better or worse, their heroes may (be guilty of some sort of character flaw or misdeed)have some flaws in their characters or misdeed in the public's mind.
The presumption can be understandable. After all, I think any
(北美句式:demographic study can show the point that the vast majority of people relying on mainstream media for their information lack the sort of critical-thinking skills and objectivity to see beyond what the media feeds them, and to realizerender the fully informed judgment about a public figure no matter heroes or not.

The third reason for my argument has to do with the long-term fallout from intense media scrutiny and the presumption discussed abovethe long-term influence and the aforementioned presumptions. (北美句式:Once tarnished as a result of intense media scrutiny, a person's reputation is forever besmirched, regardless of the merits or motives of the scrutinizers.) Those who disagree with this statement may cite the cases in which the tarnished ones ultimately get vindicated. For instance, some public figures have successfully challengedrag sheets the passage in which tarnish the celebrities, such as the National Enquirer in courts, winning large amounts of damage rewards for libel. However, in my observation, these cases are all exceptions, besides the damage rewards (is no indication that the public has expunged from its collective memory a perception that the fallen hero is guilty of the alleged character flaw or peccadillo) cannot also eradicate the minds of the public that involves the flaws in characters and misdeeds of the celebrities.

In sum, this statement is basically correct. As long as the media are incited by the maximizing profits and vast majority of public needs various stories to tarnish and slander celebrities, the media will continue to harm whichever unfortunate individuals become their cynosuresstill put the poor ones under attack. And in this society in which the heroes being tarnished and slandered is desirable, the opportunity for vindication is little consolation.北美句式:the opportunity for vindication is little consolation in a society that seems to thrive, and even feed, on watching heroes being knocked off their pedestals.

Whether the technology lifts (enhances) or abate (diminishes) the quality of our daily life, in large extent, depends on the type of the technology (one is considering) considered by our humans. As long as we know, the mechanical automation may have diminished our quality of life, on balance, digital automation is (doing more to) serving to improve our quality of life than to undermine it.

First consider mechanical automation, especially (particularly) in assembly-line manufacturing. With the emergence of the automation, (with automation came a loss of pride in and alienation from one’s work ) people have not taken their work for pride along with rendering the workers in a circumstance in which workers are alienated from their works. In this sense, the automation not only undermines our quality of life, but also leaves (renders) us limited (slaves) to the machines, due to our inability to reverse "progress". Admittedly, mechanical automation actually promotes the establishment of (spawned) our entire industries, create countless jobs, stimulate the growth of our economic, and (supplying a plethora of ) bring myriad of innovative conveniences. However, the expenditure of this development has outweighed its benefits on the environmental and social issues.

Next consider digital technology, admittedly, this new form of technology (has brought its own brand of alienation) provides its own alienation in its domain, and diminishes (adversely affected) our quality of life in other respects. For example, computer automation, particularly the invention of the Internet, (breeds information overload) which can directly contributes to the overloaded information and account for (steal) most of our disposable time and attention. As a result we are more alienated from our family, community, and coworkers. In these aspects, the digital incline to undermine our quality of life and create (its own legion of) large amount of human slaves.

On the other hand, by allocating (relegating) the computer repeating (repetitive) missions, the digital technology achieves lots of accomplishments (spawned great advances) in medicine and physics, and help us (to better) understand the world, enhance our health, and heighten(prolong) our life expectancy. Moreover, the digital technology also emancipates our architects, artists, designers, and musician via expanding the inspiration and saving time. After all, (Perhaps most important, however) it is most important factors that the digital make possible universal access to information, thereby providing a democratizing influence on our culture.

In sum, while the mechanical automation may have created a handful of slaves to modern convenience and unfulfilling work, the digital automation is more likely to improve our quality of life without enslaving us to the technology.

On the ground that the video records is more accurate and convincing than written records, the speaker accordingly comes to the conclusion that video recording is more important means of documenting contemporary life than written recording.(相比之下北美句式更加的一气呵成:According to the speaker, the video recording is a more important means of the documenting contemporary life than a written record because video recording are more accurate and convincing.)
Although I agree with the video recording can provide more objective and accurate records of events in spatial respects, other things required recording are far more than what we see and hear. Thus, the speaker overstates the importance
(comparative significance) of the video camera as a means (tool) of recording.

To begin with, (for the purpose of documenting temporal, spatial events and experiences,) I agree with the fact the video documentation can render the events or experience more accurate and convincing on the spatial and temporal records. For instance, it is impossible for anyone to describe the details (recount in complete and objective detail) of the events such as the winning attack (touchdown) at the Super Bowl, a Ballanchine ballet, the tournament of Rose Parade, or the scene at the intersection of Florence and Normandy streets during the 1992 Los Angeles, no matter how outstanding (keen) observer or journalist you are. However, these things are the most important events in our contemporary life, which may be put in our history (time capsule) for the purpose of capturing our life and time in the brink of (at the turn of) this millennium.

Furthermore, the function (the growing role) of the video camera is not limited only in recording the significant (seminal) issues. For example, Video surveillance cameras are objective witnesses with the prefect memories, thereby they can assume a role as an indispensable (evidentiary) proof (role) in the legal proceedings, such as those involving robbery, drug trafficking, police misconduct, motor vehicle violations, and even in the unbecoming (malpractice) operations in the hospital. Indeed, whenever motoring pictures are vital (central) in recording the events, the video camera can be better (superior) than the written words. A written documentation about the hurricane, tornado, or volcanic eruption cannot present (convey) an immediate and powerful nature like the video documentations. Moreover, a diary cannot also replace the video cameras to record (replay) the wedding reception, dance recital, or surprise birthday party objectively and accurately, and a real-estate brochure cannot reveal (inform) the real condition about the structure concerned the light, spaciousness, or general atmosphere (ambiance) of its surroundings as effectively as a video camera.

Nonetheless, on the other hand (for certain other purpose), the written documentations can present its advantages at certain aspects, for example, some legal affairs should be relegated into written forms, a video (is of no practical use) cannot be used in the case of a complex contractual agreement, an incorporation, or the establishment of a trust. What is more, when it comes to recording on the ideology, feelings (impression), response (reflections) to some matters, a video cannot be as useful as a written documentation. Indeed, to some extent the personal interpretation can enrich (add dimension and richness to the record) the documentations, thus the written records is more important than video records.

Finally, the video documentation is of no use on addressing the statistics and other quantitative information. Considering the foregoing examples (returning to the not example mentioned above), imagine that documentations are used to record the financial loss of the shops and the numbers of the police and firemen (firefighters), and so forth, it requires video camera at every street corner and every aisle of stores.

In one word, at least to some extent, the speaker overstates the importance of the video records. When it used in capturing the photos, saving and recalling the temporal and spatial events, the video records has their inherent merits such as objective, accurate, complete characteristics. However, through the video documentation can we only see one aspects of the world, written documentation are more needed to quantify, illustrate(demystify), and provide meaning to the world around us.

The speaker asserts (contend) the point that all the discoveries and progress are achieved through mistakes. I strongly agree with the speaker's assertion (contention) for two reasons. First, it accords to (with) our own (personal) experience; secondly, (history informs us that) continual correcting countless mistakes provides the foundation of the new discovery and actual progress through the history among all the human's endeavor on the social (societal) level.(北美句式:history informs us that on a societal level trial and error provides the very foundation for discovery and progress, in all realms of human endeavor.)

To begin with, the argument agrees (accord) with our daily (everyday) life (as humans) from childhood from to (through) the adulthood. When we are (As) infants, we learn walking by falling down again and again. (北美句式:As adolescents we discover our social niche, and develop self-confidence and assertiveness, only by way of the sorts of awkward social encounters that are part-and-parcel of adolescence. (又是一句北美: Through failed relationships not only do we discover who we are and are not compatible with, we also discover ourselves in the progress.) When we grow into the adolescent step that accounts for the seminal part of our young life, a variety of social frustrations help us to discover our own society, and develop our confidence, via failing in the relationship can we not understand those who we can befriend with or not and discover who we are. Moreover, most of us find our career path which suits us through that do not.

This same principle also can suit (apply on) the social level. Consider, for example, how we attain the achievement on our science knowledge, our science method is essentially required (a call for) trial and error to achieve progress. Any new theory must be testified by the empirical observation, and also must stand (withstand) the rigorous scientific scrutiny. And the theoretical science can regarded as a history about trial and error essentially. A apt example that can illustrate this point involves the two relative (contrary) physics theories: wave theory and quantum theory. During the last quarter of the centuries, the scientists have been struggling to disprove one or the other, or to combine (reconcile) them. As a result (As it turns out) a new discovery on string shows that neither of them is right to some extent, (北美一下:show that the quantum and wave theories are mistakes in the sense that each one is inadequate to explain the behavior of all the matters) and neither can illustrate the nature of the subjects. However, in terms of the development of physic or the new theory, the so-called "errors" are indispensable.

Furthermore, the value of trial and error is not limited to the realm of science. In the field of authority and politic, the accomplishment usually comes from the dissension and challenge, that is the time when people point out the problems of the authority. In fact, the political oppression and tyranny would go unchecked without challenging (the mistaken notions) the purpose of established institutions. Similarly, jurists and legislators who uphold and defend the legal precedent must face the continual opposition from those who question the fairness and relevance of the current laws. This ongoing challenge is critical to the vitality and relevance of our legal system.

In sum, the speaker correctly asserts that discovery and progress are made through trial and error. Indeed, our personal growth and the progress of the society, government, and law depend on various mistakes.

Dose knowledge render matters more comprehensible or more complex and more mysterious? In my opinion, the acquisition of knowledge can bring about the three results, which can be illustrated by various scientific (advance) development(北美句式:this paradoxical result is aptly explained and illustrated by a number of advances in our scientific knowledge).

To begin with, we can take the apt example involves the sonar system of the blind bats into consideration, which can help bats to navigate and seek prey. Our researchers have discovered (this system is startlingly sophisticated) its complexity. By emitting audible sounds and (then)absorb its response (processing the returning echoes), the bats can not only determine the distance from the prey, but also acquire the information about the moving direction, speed, size, and even species. However, we can further to interpret how the bats navigate and live through acquisition of this kind of knowledge. At the same time, this knowledge also points out the (incredible) complexity of function of brain and auditory of certain animals, even of humans, and create mystery and wonder how the system could evolve organically.

Or consider our knowledge on our universe. The achievement (advance) in telescope and space-exploration technology seems to prove (corroborate) the "big bang" theory, (the theory of a continually expanding universe that began at the very beginning of time with a “big bang”) which can be described as the continually expanding universe, at the beginning of the time. To some extent (on one level), this knowledge, supposing (assuming qualifies such as) it can be regarded as knowledge, helps us understand (comprehend) our location in universe and final (ultimate) destiny. On the other hand, (it adds yet another chapter to the mystery about) what material existed before the time and universe becomes another question.

Furthermore, consider the realm of atomic physics, since the naked eyes only can see (perceive) the few aspects of the matters, as our ancestors, their material world presents (appear) so simple, which seems to be the fact that we can understand all things only by (means of) our sight and touch. Nonetheless, through (by way of) the scientific knowledge, we acquire the fact that it is atoms that consist of things, while the atoms are comprised of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Then we discovered even more basic unit of matter called quark. And now a new theory called "string" points out (posits) a more fundamental and universal material unit existence. On one hand, this discovery renders the matters more feasible to be understood via explaining and reconciling the empirical observations of how matter behaves. And the "string" theory also reconciles the disparity (discrepancy) between the quantum and wave theories of physics. On the other hand, any discovery can contribute to (in turn revealed) the matter more complex than ever before. In fact, the "string" theory, which is well-rounded on theory (theoretically sound), brings about seven other dimensions besides our known three. I cannot imagine more complex and mysterious than it.

In sum, the speaker's assertion overlooks the paradox about the acquisition of knowledge, at least, when it comes to the material world. We should realize the complex and mysterious respect of the matters when we render it comprehensible.

Has creating an appealing image become more important in our contemporary society than the reality or truth behind the image? I agree with this image has become a central concern, at least in short-term business or political success (where short-term business and political success is at stake). However, from a long-term angle, I think that the image ultimately give way to (yield to) the reality and truth.

In the realm of business, the importance of the image is clearly evident.(北美句式:the important role of image is particularly evident in the business world, consider, for example)
For example, in our modern automobile industry, American cars are coming to essentially
identical to competing Japanese in almost every mechanical, structural, and price respect (as well as in price). Thereby, in order to enhance the capability of competition automobile company must render its products distinguish (differentiate) from others through the image advertising, which can actually add the exceptional value to the cars, by conjuring up certain illusory merits, such as machismo, status, sensibility. Moreover, the trend about (increasing focus on image) paying attention to the image is also becoming clearer (evident) in our book-published industry, in which the publishers are relying on its power of their brand instead of the content of the books. Today, the best-sellers would be replaced (supplanted) by others that are identical in essence except the new image, the new title, and other promoting (promotional) angle. In fact, I find (quite telling the fact) more and more publishers are being acquired by large media company. And the increasing importance of image is also serious in the music world where the creativity (originality), art illustration (artistic interpretation), and technical skills (proficiency) almost entirely yield to the sex appeal.

The growing significance of the image is also evident in the realm of politic, particularly when it comes to the president (presidential) politics. Admittedly, (北美句式:by the very nature politicking has always emphasized rhetoric and appearances above substance and fact) in essence, the political issues are always more concerned with the image rather than the substance and fact. Nonetheless, now that the emergence of the camera, our presidents pay more attention to their image, for example, Teddy Roosevelt was very careful addressing the tennis clothes (outfit) so as to ensure that he was not taken photos by the camera, due to worrying about ( for fear that )the pictures that may potentially damage (undermine) his rough-rider image that helped he to win the only one president terms. Furthermore, with the development (advent) of televisions, the images of the presidents are becoming more important, after all, it was the televisions that elected J.EK. over Nixon. And in our epoch of the television, the presidents who only have two chances (two-term) to achieve the position are elected based (largely) on their image. Hence (query whether) we could not know the results if the handsome leader Reagan, or the suave and politically correct Clinton competed with presidents Lincoln, Taft, or even ED.R., since Lincoln was homely, Taft was obese, and ED.R. was crippled.

In the long run, the importance of the image will be declined (wane). Ascribed to the fact that smoking is unhealthy, the image of the Marlboro must be ultimately give way to the truth about the hazards of the smoking. And the creation of the popular music cannot last long if it does not involve the musical creativity. The people who always buy (frequently yard) the second-hand goods know that the today's best-sellers will become tomorrow's pulp. Even in the political field, I think history (has a knack for peering away ) has the ability to pick out the image and attach importance to the real achievements. For instance, the ED.R. can be written in history is attributed to his accomplishments such as building the Panama Canal and establishing the National Park System rather than his poor wardrobe.

IN the final analysis, the image seems to be the central point at the endeavors to gain success depending to some degree on persuasion, marketing, or salesmanship. Owing to the fact that our life is becoming busier, our attentions are less paid to some certain matters, yet we have more options to choose about our products and service. For better or worse, I anticipate this trend will (continue unabated) last forever(北美句式:And our life become busier, our attention spans briefer, and our choice among products and service greater).

The speaker claims that since contemporary world is so new and complex that the past provides little guidance for living in the present. I agree with the assertion insofar as history cannot offer (foolproof) the panaceas for us in our daily life. However, I disagree with the speaker's view (北美句式:today’s world is so unique that the past is irrelevant) that today's special world has nothing to do with the past. Here is an apt example involves the way to dealing with the social pressing problems can illustrate my opinion(比较一下:One good example that support my dual position(!) is the way society has dealt with its pressing social problems over time).

Admittedly, history can be conducive to (learn the appropriateness of addressing certain social issues) coping with the social problems on societal level, especially in the property of the morality. For example, our authority are always attempting to legislate morality,(北美简洁明了:attempt to legislate morality invariably fail) which invariably fail all the time, such as the Prohibition in 1930s and failed federal legislation to regulate access to the adult-material through the Internet. Nonetheless, we are slowly learning this lesson, recent trend toward the marijuana for medication and recognition of the equal rights for the same sex partners both demonstrate.

However, the only firm lesson from history about social problems (ills) is that they (are here to stay) continue unabated forever. Just as the crime and violence, for example, they almost trouble each society, although any type (all manner) of reform, prevention, and punishment has been used. In today's world, the social trend seems to be away from reform toward " tough-on-crime" approach. Query whether the history tells us this method is the most effective to deal with the crime. No, (rather) this trend only reveals our current mores, attitudes, political climate.

Another example (involves how we deal with the mentally-ill segment of the population) has to do with the method we exert to deal with the mental-ill patients. The history tells us the fact none of the quarantine, treatment, and accommodation can solves this problem, each approach has its own demerit (comes with its own trade-offs) which cannot be overlooked. Moreover, despite the civil-rights efforts of the Martin Luther King and his progenies, (这句话给翻漏了)undermining the assertion that history helps us to solve the social problems is that the disparity of the culture the culture gapbetween African American and the American White presents to be more and more severe (seem to be widening), and the racial prejudice is a timeless phenomenon.

In sum, I agree with the history can actually has the value in the case of how to live together as a society, for example, it can (help us appreciate the futility of legislating morality) render us understanding the fact that the legislation on morality is useless. However, the historical essential social lesson appears to be today's social problems are as old as society itself, and that there are no panaceas for solving these problems, just adoptalternate other ways of coping with them.

The speaker claims that the (wherever) political, utilitarian need for new structures should be taken precedence over the preservation of the historic buildings as a record of our past. Nonetheless, in my opinion, which interest should be take precedence should be determined on a case-by-case basis, and should not only (account for) take the practical and historic consideration, but also aesthetic factors.

When (in) determining whether to pull down (raze) older buildings, the planners should think over the contemporary (current) and anticipated practical (utilitarian) needs. For example, as an additional hospital to serve the health-care needs in certain fast-growing community, the necessity of the hospital (might very well) outweigh any interest in preserving the historical buildings that sites on the proposed site. Or the interest in an additional car park which may maintain the economic survival needs of a city's downtown district may take precedence over the historical value of the old buildings (that stands in the way of the car park). On the other hand, for instance, if the need is largely for more office room, on some occasion, the appropriate add-on or linking to other old buildings may have also achieved the same effect(as well as) as pulling down the old buildings to make room for the new one. Of course, the expensive retrofits might not be worthwhile, if these retrofits cannot meet the needs in any case.

It is the interest in preserving the historical records that is competing the community's utilitarian need, and its importance (weight of this interest) also should depend on the facts. Perhaps, an old buildings may represent the past (bygone) era uniquely, assumed an important role as an authority department (municipal structure) in the history of this city, served as the home of some founding people in the certain realm and the significant historical figures, or the locations of the famous historical events. Any of those situations (at the expense of) all can contribute to sacrificing the interest in the utilitarian community's needs, which can be considered justified. On the other hand, if there are several old buildings can identically represent the same historical time, in other words, if the historical value is not very distinguishing (unremarkable), then the its historical value may pale in the value of the compelling practical needs for a new buildings.

There are also other factors, such as the aesthetic, architectural value, competing with the practical community's practical needs besides (apart from) the historical value. A building might be one of only a few that represents a certain architectural style, or it is especially beautiful due to its architectural technology and materials used (employed) in its structure, which may (be cost-prohibitive) cost so much to replicate. Moreover, it can also damage its aesthetic and historical value just through altering its appearance and architecture integrity. Of course, it is very difficult to quantify the aesthetic value and weigh against the utilitarian considerations. Yet, the planners should strive to account for aesthetic value.

In sum, whether to pull down the old buildings for a new one should not be determined indiscriminately. Instead, the planners should weigh the community's practical needs between the aesthetic value on case-by-case basis.
