题目:ARGUMENT9 - The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.

"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."



Merely based on the insufficient evidence, the author concluded that Omega University should now stop student evaluation of professors. In order to support the commendation, the author incites that the fact that Omega professors have begun to give higher grades to the students in their classes and throughout student grade have risen by thirty percent. In addition, the author indicates that Omega graduates have not been as successful as the graduates from Alpha University, and this issue can be explained by the evidence that potential employers believe the grades at Omega are inflated. Further reflection reveals that the evidence is insufficient to prove the author’s commendation.

First of all, the fact that Omega professors have begun to give higher grades to students and student grade averages risen greatly was caused by the new procedure which encouraged students to assess their professors, but the author cannot convince me that the increased grades are caused by the mendacious acts of the professors. It is entirely possible that it is this procedure that encouraged students to study hard, resulting in their advancement in study. Without ruling this possibility, the author cannot deny that this procedure is effective in promoting student grade.

Second of all, the fact that students from Omega University have not been successful as students from Alpha University may not be the result of the new procedure. First, the author fails to provide that whether Alpha University have adopted the evaluating procedure. If so, the author’s assumption is unfounded. Secondly, the author fails to provide the differences between two universities. It is entirely possible that the quality of Alpha University is better than Omega University and the students from Alpha University are more excellent. So, without ruling out these possibilities, the author’s conclusion is apparently unwarranted.

Finally, even if the evaluating procedure is the reason for the failure of students in finding jobs, the author’s advice cannot be well supported. Whether students can find a successful job is result of some factors, such as student’s ability, quality of education, market demand and so on. So, if Omega University has the desire to make their students successful in finding jobs, it need to work from these aspects rather than only based on the evaluating procedure.

In sum, the author fails to prove the conclusion that the grades is authentically inflated and this is the reason for the failure of students in finding jobs and the commendation that Omega University should cancel the evaluating procedure. In order to entangle the issue about failure in finding job, the author should find out the authentic reason in detail and take measurements accordingly.

(这句话貌似有点引起歧义~感觉像是说高成绩就是由那个评价政策引起的~但实际不是~还可能是由于课程的更改~毕竟十五年到现在情况改变了很多) It is entirely possible that it is this procedure that encouraged students to study hard, resulting in their advancement in study.
