The arts are the reflections of its artists. Whether the arts can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society depend on the ideas of the artists can represent those of the whole society or not.
In the ancient times, the almost commonly shared ideas- the awe to the nature and spirits- by people could represent the society. Many artworks were created to show people's reverence to the nature. The laudatory poems of the elements of the nature-lightning and thundering; the exquisite article for sacrifice; the songs and dances of the ritual for totem adoration, all of which reveal the ideas that the people of the society wished the protection from the nature and spirits for their lives.
Things were different and complex in the medieval times. On the one hand, there were many artworks that served for the lords' enjoyments or benefits. The palace painters earned their lives by drew for the kings and aristocrats; the luxurious palaces, though considered to be the grandiose artistic architecture, were at the expense of so many lives and pains. Do such arts reveal the ideas and impulses of that society? On the other hand, many maestros created lots of arts to show their desire for freedom and humanity.
We can appreciate the matured beauty of female from Mona Lisa of Da Vinci; and realize the faith of victory from David of Michelangelo, both of which are the vital parts of the Revival of Learning during 14-16th centuries. Such desires of freedom and humanity were not only what the artists pursed but they could also represent most people’s hidden ideas and impulses of that society.
Nowadays, the complexity of our society brings more than one motif of the social ideas and impulses. The arts, therefore, could be divided into many types to analyze whether they can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of the society. Many music, fictions and films tell the stories of love, bravery, fortitude—the enduring merits of humanity; or describe the cruelty wars to display our dream of peace. Meanwhile, there are many non-mainstream even anti-social artworks that may contain propaganda that seriously undermines social stability. Such arts, of course, can not reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of our society.
Though I divided this argument into three aspects, the subjectivity is inevitable. After all, the arts are the outcomes of subjectivity. Thus, only we know the relative background and historical knowledge that can we realize the true meaning of the arts.作者: 景辰 时间: 2009-6-13 22:04:13
