176."The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of art is to upset. Therein lies the value of each."

命题：科学作用是消除疑虑，艺术目的是颠覆。
我的观点：部分赞同
科学是以揭示自然或社会现象的真相为目的，采取科学的方法进行观察或研究，并最终扩展人类知识体系的一个过程。由此可见，它的目的是消除人类对未知事物的疑惑。但是某些领域内科学研究的方法、所得结果在与人类的道德观念相冲突时，科学就成了部分人甚至所有人的困扰。艺术的定义从未被统一过，但是我更倾向于它表示一种用于产生具有美感的创作。基于这种看法，我认为契合大众审美观的作品的作用更偏向于抚慰人心，但总有些艺术作品的美学特征与大众审美观有偏差甚至相反，这些作品会被那些持大众审美观人所不解，使他们困惑，甚至被他们认为作是在彰显事物的阴暗面。

2但某些方面，科学成了众人心中的困惑。比如动物实验、核武器、克隆技术。
3经典艺术作品，大多符合大众的审美观，它们带给欣赏者的是一种享受。
4某些艺术，如许多暴力美学，这些审美观只能被少部分所接受，在大众审美观的作用下，多数人认为这些艺术表现的不是美感，而只是一些符号堆砌，甚至是在彰显社会的阴暗面。

Science which is aiming to discover the truth of the natural or social phenomenon refers to a procedure of research with disciplined methods then expanding the system of human being’s knowledge. Consequently, the purpose of science itself is to eliminate people’s confusion, is to reassure. However, when some scientific research methods and results in some domains deviate from human being’s morality discipline, they become confusion of some sectors of the society or even the whole society. Considering the definition of art, which has not been uniformed or cannot be uniformed, I prefer such one, art denotes creations to produce aesthetic results. Based on this opinion, the function of those arts which accord to general aesthetic tends to be pacifying people. But there are always some arts, of which aesthetic characters depart from general aesthetic. They might be misunderstood, even be considered as demonstrations of the negative side of society by those who persist the general aesthetic characters.

Admittedly, it is the science that resolves so many puzzles which existed in the historic time and are coming out each single day. From the history of development of science, as the increasing of systematic knowledge, the recognition of nature and social phenomenon is becoming deeper and deeper. For instance, in area of biology, the evolution deciphers the question where are we from, which confused people until the time of Darwin, the genetics explains why we are like our ancestor. In physics, classical mechanics created by Newton, could be used as basis to resolve all regular dynamics problems; the relative theory raised by Einstein shows the laws followed by high-speed moving objects; the quantum mechanics demonstrate the pictures of micro-world.

However, some aspects of science become controversial issues in the modern society. Because of the similarity of gene between rats and people, there are hundreds of millions rats died in biological and medical experiments all over the world. To recommend scientists to restrict the use of animals, to refine their experiments to minimize the number of animals they use, lots of animal protectionists are trying to refresh the discipline of animal experiments. For another thing, today’s nuclear science makes creating a nuclear bomb more and more simple. In fact, decades of years ago, people who depart from the initial craze for the great power of this bomb had begun to plan the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Until now, the problem of nuclear weapon is also one of the most controversial issues. Finally, take a look at the cloning technology of mammals. Due to religion factors and people’s deep-rooted morality, it has been restricted to a small degree.

Such dichotomy also could be used to arts. Most of those classical works, accords to people’s general aesthetic. With the attitudes of appreciation, people enjoy them very much. For instance, when people staring at Vincent van Gogh’s painting Sunflowers, they must be impressed by its comparison of bright colors, be enlightened by the passion outpouring from the painting, then try to go into his spiritual world. The sunflowers are symbols of initial impulse and passion. Michelangelo’s sculpture David is recognized as greatest male sculpture. The enthusiasm of it fires every visitor’s nerve. Leonardo da Vince’s painting Mona Lisa attracts everyone because her secret smile.

Yet, there are always some art’s special characters cannot be accepted by general aesthetic, such as the use of violence aesthetic in movie art. Some moralist protectors and public critics stated such aesthetic has much negative influence to the whole society, especially for the teenagers. Those arts with really special aesthetic factors might become public issue whenever they appear.

To sum up, the function of science is mainly to resolve confusions, yet some methods it uses or some results of it might be public issues. Those arts accord to general aesthetic can cause most people’s resonance. Meanwhile, the arts not accord to general aesthetic are always public critics’ favorites.
