In this society of rapid pace and fierce competition, people tend to attach more importance to adjusting the current society and considering their potential future. In this regard, history is apt to be neglected for lack of relevance to lives today and tomorrow. However, it deserves more attention with profound value.

Firstly, studying history has contributed a lot to social development these days. In the respect of scientific advancement, historical achievements or failures in relevant domain can lead to innovations or breakthrough directly or indirectly. Newton’s Theory of Gravity seems to be an incidental production by himself; nevertheless, he himself contended that his discovery is established on the necessary basis of pooling theory and from other crusaders. Therefore, scientific and technological improvements are the combination of historical legacy and innovative creation.

As far as culture or civilization progress, learning the thoughts and viewpoints of our ancestors can avoid unnecessary deviance when people are likely to make mistakes as well as function as a guidance or inspiration while people are at a loss. Take Thomas Jefferson’s faith for instance. Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States, has written the Declaration of Independence. He once wrote to his nephew that do what you believe is right. He held the opinion that once determined, people should not change just because of the opinions or people against theirs. He further points out that it is difference rather than similarity that keeps freedom alive. The belief as to handling diversity or rivalry is of great value to living people nowadays. Obama’s “change” in his Presidential speech embodies the continuous belief of determined attitude towards changes and reformations from Jefferson.

Secondly, learning history has a positive influence on coming future. We should not deny the significance of history owing to less closely linked to daily lives; instead, we should value this study in a long run. One issue of realizing equality of all human beings may root in slavery centuries ago and Martin Lauder King’s Movement, which has drawn people’s attention to racial discrimination and urging racial equality. The predominant spirit of equality handed down from history paves the way for how to deal with people with different colors all over the world. Thought of Chinese culture, Confucianism seems too abstract and remote to link with our daily lives at the first glace. It essence-- relationships of superiors and inferiors, family siblings, career and interpersonal interactions, however, has thrives in China for 3000 years and is essential to every culture. Many western countries, such as U. K., U. S., and German, have cherished and acknowledged Confucian ideas to deal with their own business and further ready to infuse it into educational field for their young generations.

In sum, history is the best lesson we can learn from. Both merits and failures in history can avoid probably repeated mistakes, enlighten confused thinkers, and facilitate accomplishing ultimate goals for human beings, such as common prosperity, racial equality and so on. One point should be noted here, is that studying history does not mean follow history without suitable change or adaptation, or our society will never progress but risk rotating.
