每天都得慢慢磨才能磨出来~ TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively." WORDS: 552 TIME: 01:36:30 DATE: 2009-7-28 11:07:59 Opening Greek Mythology, we are startled to discover that Zeus is famous for his extramarital affairs; Hera is known for jealousy; Poseidon is described as brutal. The gods are no longer standing high upon; instead, they have flaws and make mistakes just like human beings. Children are learnt to be critical from their very childhood even facing the authorities. Some would not applaud to such skepticism for the reason that criticism will embarrass the teachers or tutors, which will be detrimental to the education system. What is meant by this is that being critical may bring students more rebellious; as a result, they would probably defy the rules and regulations of the school, to an extreme, they could go astray. However, I should point out that those opponents have not comprehended the essence of critical pedagogy. In reality, being skeptic offers students a perfect opportunity to think by themselves, to go beneath the surface meaning and first impression, which is the fuel to make progress in society. They should be cultivated to form the habits of questioning. It was because of questioning of the flatness (简洁一点吧)of the Earth that Magellan circumnavigated the globe. It was because of questioning of classical physics that Einstein established the modern physics. In addition, those who are criticized can go ahead much more quickly than those who are not. All men are fallible, and the only way to progress is to correct our mistakes. Critique provides a chance for us to revise our thoughts and behaviors. In this sense, we notice that many governments are welcome all suggestions and comments. On the contrary, a lack of skepticism would be hazardous not only to individuals but also to the whole society. Let us turn to North Korea (DPRK). All the students, the future of the nation, are taught that the greatness of a nation rests in the brilliance of its leader. Whatever their leader says represents truth, justice, and rightness. The nationals are not permitted to doubt the leader; instead, almost all of them are grateful to be blessed by their leader. Take a vivid example here. Even when a volunteer African doctor healed their eye illness, at the very moment of their recovery of sight, they rushed to the portrait of their leader and went down on their knees to thank their gorgeous leader for sending this doctor here. Pathetic, isn't it? When the nationalities lose the ability to criticize, they are living in a huge illusion. In reality, its government blockades the majority of outside information as possible as it can. Consequently, they could not distinguish white from black. It seems that DPRK is a solidary union and all the people vow to protect their leader. We could not help to wondering what if one day the whole nation is exposed to the massive information suddenly? Will they still choose to stand by their brilliant leader or will they go crazy? Maybe is the latter one. Because they have lost their ability of skepticism for so long that they could not deal with a great deal of "rights" and "wrongs". Taking into account what has been discussed above, being doubtful is not a curse to the society. Actually, with certain skepticism, the society as well as individuals is very likely to progress; otherwise tragedies could befall. |

TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively." In nowadays society, mass media is creating flooding information to almost drawn people. Students have to be careful to choose and judge what they learn, for much of what they receive might only be temporarily true and the else are absolutely preposterous. As a result, it is safe to be skepticism when students are learning, but also quite time consuming. To be an effective learner, students should really maintain a balance in readily accepting and skeptical choosing. Admittedly, there is no safer way to hold a certain skepticism when learn. Almost every area of knowledge system is founded in few hundreds of years, limited by both insufficient practical experience text and confined theory system. All the formulas and principles printed in text books could be actually false, let along other many derived knowledge. If students simply accept them without a second thought, they might be at a loss or refuse to update what they learnt when former knowledge turn out to be ridiculous. Also, it would be of great benefit for students to try to reason and demonstrate what they learn. Though there are little chances for them to disprove written theories, they can comprehend and remember what they learn more clearly. On the contrary, simply believing all knowledge given by teachers, students may find it difficult to apply to use and easily forget them. By holding a skeptic attitude when learning, students can master what they learn more easily and profoundly. Though some advantages can be enjoyed by carefully doubting, students sometimes also need to quickly accept given knowledge in order to be effective. Being too skeptic in learning is like marching in mine field, thoroughly examining every inch of field can ensure a safety but solders can hardly reach demanded position in time. Also, the present knowledge is no that dangerous though may with some flaws. Most of what students are taught remains relatively correct enough for nowadays society to conduct research and application. Thus, as long as this information is beneficial for the social progress, students could embrace them fully without necessity of skepticism. After all, any form of instruction is for purpose of application and improvement which can regardless of the process. If students are bogged down in the morass of being skeptical of every word they learn, the society becomes paralyzed due to lack of courage of application. Throughout history, human beings have suffered too much dilemma when dealing with conflicts between new theories and wildly accepted knowledge. From ancient time to mid-age, common public always believed that the earth is the center of the whole universe and refuse to acknowledge that we are not so special. Many great astronomers who held different opinions against the pontiff were persecuted. What people have abandoned are not only these brilliants, but also piles of chances of technology progress. It is valuable of people to persist what they hold, but irrational to blindly refuse fresh ideas. When common public, especially students, encounter with different theories, it is better to accept them with reservation rather than rejecting them because there are no reliable means to justify them and at the same time we can not miss any chance to make a progress. Lying between choices of acceptance and skepticism, it is too hard for students to make right decisions constantly. But it would be always advisable to accept knowledge which is useful and applicable, at the same time be ready to overthrow present ideas. In this way, students can be effective learners. |
