109"The purpose of many advertisements is to make consumers want to buy a product so that they will 'be like' the person in the ad. This practice is effective because it not only sells products but also helps people feel better about themselves."
I agree with the speaker's threshold assertion that the advertisements which make many consumers want to 'be like' the person in the ad strongly help to sell products. Yet, in my view, this practice, whose aim is only selling products, would not make people who have bought this product feel better about themselves.
I concede that many advertisements that make people want to 'be like' the person in the ad are generally advertisements well made. Actually, this practice has been used consistently in the advertisement as I observed on the television and by other media. If it does not effective as speaker acclaimed, advertiser would not apply it so frequently. For instance, almost every brands has set up a celebrity or someone perfect for market the products as their brand celebrity. In the sight of marketing specialists, the function of this kind of advertisement is to attract normal people's desires to buy products in the ad through make up a unreal character which people want to emulate.
Turning next to the speaker's latter assertion that the advertisement could make people feel better about themselves, I strongly doubt it. As we discussed, the consumer want to 'be like' the person who is made up by the advertiser, which is almost impossible because normal people may not actually fit the products like celebrities, which have been trained and dressed up for a long time, do in the ads. Normal people have brought the product in the ad probably rather feel depressed to themselves than 'feel better' because the huge different between the person in the ad and themselves. In reality, most products have nothing to do with the celebrities in the ads, it make no sense that people brought certain product wish to 'be like' the person in the ad.
After all, the only purpose of advertisement is to sell products, the person in the ad is just a mean to market the brand and products. Actually, whether people who bought the product showed on the television would feel better or not depends on their attitude to the advertisement. On the objective side, the function of ad is clearly selling goods, but actually, advertisers make advertisements to lead a trend, and most normal people cannot get rid of it. So, if people separate the celebrities from the products, it would not bring meaningless exciting or depressed.
In sum, the speaker well analyze that the reason why people would buy certain products in some advertisements, but fail to infer that advertisement would make people feel better about themselves. |
